Title: Will this block and headgasket seal?
Post by: Dakotakid on March 06, 2011, 08:56:13 pm
I've got a block which was previously bored 0.20 mm and then run with Brazilian pistons for 6 hard years. For all you guys who constantly say that ether is a "do" deal, take note. Ether popped the precup into the cylinder and destroyed the head and piston. No rod and no main saddle damage.

Look at the photos and tell me if the head gasket will seal if this is bored another 0.20 mm and receives a skim cut to ensure a flat deck. The ONLY damage is at the VERY top above the ridge. The ridge is barely evident (no fingernail catching anyway). In the one photo, it appears as though the cylinder wall is scored all the way down. It's actually "rubbed" and running a fingertip or fingernail into the bore reveals nothing to the senses. You can see that the existing ridge did not get rubbed through....just "polished."

The deck top is not compressed where it appears the precup has compressed it. Besides, it would receive a slight deck mill prior to rebuild. I placed a new head gasket on top of the deck just to see what I think. I think there will be no problem once the cylinder is hogged and the deck is skimmed. What do you think? It is the #4 hole.

Edit: the glowplug-induced explosion rolled the very hard precup over into the bore. Ether is cool skit....huh?
The rings on this piston were broken as well.

I wouldn't have a problem with that. Run it to the machine shop and get them to mill it as you said, bore, run that ridge tool around and call it good. Your HG should be back of that bad spot so it should seal regardless.
