Title: ball bearing turbo
Post by: Benjamin on March 06, 2011, 06:31:20 am
Guys,

Probably you allready know this, but i was so enthousiast when i read this.
These days newer stock VNT turbos are bb (ball bearing)
you can reneconize them by reading the garrett types

gt1749v
gtb1749v is ballbearing

they would spool quicker, and should be possible to run more rpm

ive never heard anything about the B series VNTs being ball bearing..

how for sure are you? your not just assuming this right? got some proof to back it up?

I think a K in the part number denotes water cooled. I'm pretty sure the B is the second generation VNT vane design where the vanes are supported from both sides like this GTBXXXXXX:

Search TDI club for GTB2056VK & you'll see what I mean, there are a few build threads.

only avaible in Dutch, you can translate the latest paragrafe down under in the page.
http://squadra-tuning.nl/NL/techniek/JTD_tuning/JTD_turbo.html

The local alfa specialist tuner says on the newest engine's 2.4 and 1.6 there is a GTB serie, and he tells on his website this is a ball bearing turbo. I am indeed assuming the B stands for ballbearing, but i dont think the tuner would write this if its not.

Alfa 159 2.4JTDm 210hp (not 200) from 1/2009 and newer got the Garrett Honeywell GTB2056V, he claims this is a ballbearing axle/shaft.

He says also the Alfa Mito 1.6JTDm is with the newest generation turbocompressors like the GTB2056v, this Mito got a Garrett Honeywell GTB1446V.

Sorry, my post sucked & wasn't clear. If its a ball bearing turbo it would need to be water cooled and therefore would have the K in the part number as I see it. The b does not stant for ball bearing.

i think blackdogvans explanation is a little more believable.

someone tear one apart and take pics of the bearings. i bet they are still journal bearings.

I always thought that BB turbos are not great for diesels because of the high turbine RPM's that diesel's usually run compared to a typical gas car.  At very high turbine speeds, journal bearings are king since a floating oil film has much less drag than a ball bearing.  Low turbine speeds, it's a different story...

so basically put, the BB turbos are great for spool up, but thats about it?

That's my understanding of it.  But don't take my word for it.
