Post by: the caveman on March 05, 2011, 07:27:51 pm
There's already 2 in the last couple of days. I'm sure our moderators know, but please avoid the obvious spammers

But, this isn't a spam thread, it was a warning to other users to watch out for the spam since its back.. which is a good warning, considering a lot of spammers post malicious links and sites that could possibly infect your computer.

i was just adding on to what Caveman was saying..

Vince always reminds everyone about how hard it is to remove posts after other people, AND the spammer post things up..

perhaps making a black hole forum that no one but admins have access to, for moving the whole thread into would be best kind of like vortex

Problem is a lot of spammers and bots used scripts that create MANY users, which makes it increasingly difficult to remove at once.  Keeping them from creating spam posters is the hardest, because when they do, they can create many many threads at once. On the vwdieselparts.com forum I tried captcha, like was done here, but they found ways to do that.

So I added a couple questions and drop down boxes and haven't had a spam registration yet, or a spam poster.

Is the best way to avoiding anymore infections is by not posting replies to spam posts, or is there something else we can do?

Vince was only saying adding posts to spam posts makes it harder to clean them up.  On the board I run you can delete a topic and all its replies with one click, but I don't know how SMF does it. The best way is to try and prevent the registrations to begin with.

I can delete an entire thread, but have to go thru each post individually to make sure it wasn't someone else's thread first.   There also appears to be no functionality to easily delete all posts associated with a single person... so all of it is a highly-manual process.

A bunch of us have emailed suggestions to Marc for further things that can be done... we'll see what he does with it.

In the meantime, yes... just leave 'em alone.  They don't need to be reported (that just fills up my gmail account with reporting spam I get to clean out as well  :) ) and you don't want to respond to 'em in any way... especially by clicking any of the links within the spam.  There there be dragons.  :(
