Title: How hard does your diesel get driven daily?
Post by: Bugsy_malone 666 on March 02, 2011, 07:05:15 pm
Ok this is kind of a transmission question vs fuel economy. I am looking at a kind of fuel economic install with a 1.6IDI NA with some form of turbo on it and to keep things simple was thinking of keeping the current 1.8 gasser box in my mk3.

70mph ish is around 3300rpm with my 17" wheels.

So the question is, daily what sort of RPM does your IDI cruise at and whats its fuel economy like? are you running a petrol or diesel box? 4/5speed? codes would be good :)

Then maybe I/we can all formulate plans of a good box on a bugdet if need be :)

I haven't watched mileage that closely lately. My ex Audi 80 got ~3150rpm/70mph, stock 5-speed td transmission. Average mileage was about 5.8-6,1litres/100km. Best was 5,1. And that was at 170hp tune. That 80 quattro I have now, has gasser short geared transmission, ~3700/70mph. Average is now 7-8 litres...

The noise will drive you nuts before you hurt the thing, if that's what you are thinking.  :)

On flat land I like 2800rpm at interstate speeds, more like 3k if it's hilly much.  Running an AGS diesel 5spd
with a NA 1.6 is noisy @70mph, enough so I find myself doing 67 or so just to get it down a hair.  I miss my 7A 5spd, but it was
a bit much in 5th for a NA motor sometimes, I wish 4th was taller in it or something, it's the same as the AGS though other than the tall
5th.

I have an AGS with a 3.67 R&P instead of stock IIRC 3.94. It also has the peloquin 80% kit, but no peliquin diff  :'(
right around 39-40mpg combined. I have 185/65r14 too. The 155/80r13 usually yield better milage.

I have had as high as 47mpg and as low as 34mpg < was the first tank on a new engine.

I need an intercooler and things hopefullly wll be better.

EDIT
EGT are bad. I let off between 1,200 and 1,400F...once again intercooler will help. Cruising at 70mph level road I will have around 500F to 650F.

K24
3" DP and 3" all the way back
3" intake piping filter to turbo inlet
ported/polished head undercut stainless valves
Giles pump and injectors
Max 25PSI, only sees that under hard acceleration, usually 15psi or less.

I get 40mpg at 75mph with an AWY 5 speed transmission, and 185/60/14 tires in a 91 Jetta. Running a Giles pump, but no mods other than that.

I drive my '86 Golf NA 1.6 diesel 120 miles a day round trip to work. 115 miles of that is flat freeway. Just swapped tranny's, and have 3 tankfuls on the new one, so here's both the numbers....

Original....ACH transmission, 3.94 final drive and a .75 fifth, 175/70R13 stock tires, cruise at 67 at 3000 rpm.....52.3 mpg average over 11 months.

New transmission.....ASF transmission, 3,67 final drive and a .75 5th. Same stock tires. I now cruise at 72 at a quieter 2850 rpm, and averaging over 3 tanks of 54.7 mpg.

I fill the car myself and really top it off every time. I have a nice set of 15" wheels with 195/50R15's on them that I haven't used since I started the long commute......they suck about 6 mpg's right away. I have one hill I go up where the max speed in 5th with the ACH was 52 mph. With the new tranny, I drop to 4th and keep it at 55 all the way up the hill at about 3/4's throttle. With the ACH, 55 was a screaming 3500 rpm+.

...perhaps loaded down with a couple people and in hilly terrain it might be a pain, but for me this is simply a very functional, money saving commuter car that can not be beat.

ok I find this a bit interesting! It seems that with some peoples 'TD' gearboxes, maybe due tyre sizes the RPM is similar to what I get from my current 1.8 gasser gearbox/engine combo. What I was looking at is the fact that trying to track down the king of diesel boxes the 'TDi' boxes with the highest ratios can become expensive, when for the most part it may be the case that other boxes that come with our cars are already fine for the application.

I think the fun part I will have is the fact I have to do the US to UK Gallons to work out what your MPG is like lol. so 40mpg US Gallon is 47mpg UK gallon, 50mpg US is 59mpg UK gallon! So if I see a lower result from you guys and think hmm thats not much when infact anything 40mpg plus is actually really good!

By comparison my new golf on average does somethingl ike 37.8 US MPG! seems pretty rubbish for a TDi!

Iam running Forged alloy, much lighter than steel or cast alloy

195-45-15 Kuhmo's
42 psi nitrogen front
33 rear

Only thing lighter is My dymag's carbon Fiber wheel at 19x .5 13lbs & 19x12 at 17 lbs

remember rotating mass

Put dymag's on a hybrid anything and watch spped and mileage increase
But at 11K per set , No

i got 155/80/r13's on my car, with a GC trans, and it will go 100mph.. on the governor pretty much. it went alot faster with the 4A in there..

my car is probably one of the hardest driven car on the forum..
