.5mm = .020 over bore..
there has been a discussion about rings going on for a while.
-
and just so you know, 1.5 and 1.6Ds have the SAME rings..
make sure the rings you get have a 3 piece oil ring..

Yes, see i felt stupid for even asking the question. :-\
I guess I just needed to ask to be 100% sure.
Thanks
PS. mods please delete so I don't look like a fool :'(

you gotta mess up pretty good to get a thread deleted, or ask that it be deleted..

I'm sorry to nitpick, but sometimes irony gets the best of me. "Fool" is spelled with two O's.
That it is. I was posting from my phone... Sorry about that.

I honestly don't care. I was posting from a touch screen phone, and was in a hurry. I know this was a stupid question, and honestly I should have never asked. I do know my way around these engines, although, it might not seem like it from what I said. I just know that the majority of people on this forum know way more than me, so I figured it wasn't a crime to post. Although, next time I wont post. Sorry for wasting your guys time.

It NEVER hurts to ask.. Even if you feel you know the answer, it's usually cheaper to ask... ::)
AS far as touch screens go, I'm about to fix the #&$*(&($* auto correct with a hammer! >:( >:( >:(
-
I would like to think I know about these engines as well, but I had no answer for you. I think it a good question. I figured it was different as I didn't know the bore size of the 1.5 vs 1.6.
Definately not a waste of my time
-
i just KNEW that the 1.5 and 1.6 are the same bore size. the stroke is what makes a 1.5 smaller. its a de-stroked 1.6...
-
Yes, I have mainly worked with 1.6's and have little knowledge of 1.5's. I know they have the same bore size, but different pistons, or at least the over sized pistons are different, and many say they are made of "unobtainium." All I wanted to do is make sure the rings themselves were not made of the same material...
And yes I hear you about the damned auto correct. >:(
-
Actually, the 1.6 is a stroked 1.5. The latter came first.
-
For future reference for someone down the road:
Differences in the 1.5 aside from stroke
Different sized wrist pin and rod bearing, center oil return port in the head in block is smaller, pre cups are smaller volume, more metal in the engine block at the bases of the cylinders and oil pump boss..
Similarities to the 1.6
Same bore
Same main bearings
Pretty much same everything else
-
And, personally, I loved my first VW diesel engine....it was a 1.5 '78 Rabbit.
When I drove my first 1.6, I said, "....what a slow, cantankerous sow!"
-

yes, i know this.. i know the 1.5 was first by a long shot.
i was just saying tho, its basically the same engine as a 1.6, just a shorter stroke, and some other small similarities.
