how hard is it to change the bearings in a bosch alt? is it even feasible?
ive got a 65 amp alt off an 86 golf, non a/c.. bearings going out.
ive also got a brand new 90 amp off an 85 GTI tho..but the pig tails are different.
is the 65 amp specific to the golf, or can i use the newer style 90a off the GTI. the 90a alt is off a car with a/c..

They used to be about $4 a piece at an industrial bearing store...been a few years since I bought them. I still have a sack of them somewhere in storage.
All you really need is a little bearing puller to make it happen.

so its completely possible to separate the housing and replace the bearings? sweet..

why not hook up a 105 amp one wire amp?
-
cause it probably isnt going to bolt up. i want something that atleast bolts up, or fix what i have.
if it was as easy as taking the 65 off there, re wiring the charging harness, and bolting on the 105A unit, i would definitely go that route.

The alt I am running is off of a non A/C 83 GTI that I cut the pig tail off that car and ran it into the A/C car I have now with spade terminals at the other end of the pigtail.
BTW I also can run on sentences as well as Alts

I've found that on (some? most? all?) mk2 alts - the gassers have smaller bolt holes at the bottom mount - than the diesel counterparts. Have had to bore a couple out with a drill to get fit on a diesel bracket with the larger bolt.
fwiw

That is the way mine was as well.

all my alternators are either mk1 diesel, or mk2 gasser a/c
i think im just gonna take the 90 amp off my GTI and try and make it work. its a fresh alternator anyways..

Acme makes an adapter bracket for the GM one wire alts to go in the sami diesel conversion.

I would pick the Bosch over the GM unit.

I have had GM vehicles longer than I have been driving VWs. I have only ever replaced one GM alt. I think I have put an alt on every vw I have ever owned. I am not saying bosch is bad, but I am saying I have great success with the GM units. I don't drive new GM vehicles either :D

I've been slapping Delco Remy (aka GM) alts on my VW's and anything else I can fit em on for ages.. AS far as the GM alts (as used to the mid 80's) versus the Bosch units that VW used, I really can't say there's much difference in lifespan or performance..
I can say however the Delco Remy alts are cheap and plentiful.. There's no way I'm gonna find the exact replacement alt for my Rabbit on a holiday weekend, but I know that the big box autoparts will have a couple 70 amp Delcos on hand...

I have a 105 amp alt I am going to be running. Its from a minivan, and I will be happier with more juice. I am also running a smaller pulley for more RPM's and a better output.
