Title: Race Ware head bolt studs and MLS gasket
Post by: RustyCaddy on February 11, 2011, 07:14:38 am
Anyone know if the 50 ft/lb final torque specs for Race Ware studs is enough to crush and get a good seal with a MLS head gasket?

Folks seem to trust ARP to do the job but ARP seems to be able to take a lot more torque.

Bently states up to I think 44 ft.lbs and then another 1/4 or 1/2 turn (not sure which) but I'm sure 50 is not enough.  My arp are torqued to 110 ft.lbs and no issues.  I only have about 10 k on it since, but I haven't had any problems with the mls at 110.

50 is prolly enough for a fiber gasket, but i doubt a metal gasket is gonna seal at 50 ft lbs..

the torque discrepancy comes from the different thread pitches.

50 should be fine for a fiber gasket with low boost.

^ This
100 Ft/ lb on Raceware will most likely damage your head.

When ARP are torqued to 110 ft/lbs to crush a MLS thats about 30% over spec (i am assuming the ultra-toque stuff is being used...if not the comparisons get pretty shaky); so going to 65 ft/lbs with Race Ware would be about 30% over for them too.  i guess that 65 ft/lbs would be worth a try but Dr. Diesel in another thread went to 70 ft/lbs with Race Wares and thought he might have over torqued them and ended up pulling those studs...not much room for error.

i haven't compared the pitch between ARP and Race Ware side by side but they look really close.

Thanks guys for weighing in...that helps a lot.

And what the h*ll are head "bolt" studs in the thread topic anyways  :-[
