Anyone know who what where how when on these pistons? Nural? Prothe? VAG? Something else? Pretty sure they aren't Prothe as the oil scraper groove isn't notched on either side of the pin as i've seen in other images of those pistons. Is the yellow discoloration between the rings normal?
From an engine that slurped oil & hydrolocked.

They are not prothe pistons. The prothe pistons have no support for the oil ring above the notches on each side of the wrist pin. I don't know what they are though.

I pulled the rod off yesterday, they are indeed Nural ALH +.5mm. Very nice.

I bought a tdi piston set from prothe a few years back. I'm still running them so they can't be that bad but go to his website and look at the second picture in the listing for his pistons. The notch cast into the piston goes right into the oil ring groove. No support for the oil ring in four places on the piston. Then look at a good piston to see the difference.

Their good looking pistons tho. Im goin to use it in my rebuild. i just dont really trust those rings.

Only a few hundred more for Mike W out of the vendors section. I'm not sure the prothe have the crown oil cooling btw.

Judging from the picture, the piston has more machined surface around the wrist pin compared to prothes. I'm sure the extra money you pay for nural pistons is worth it. I'd install a used set of nural pistons over new prothe pistons especially after trying the prothe ones. I am definitely not a fan of prothes rings. They seem to take forever to seat. Awesome score on the pistons Blackdogvan.

the valve cups on the pistons are different also the nural ones has an open cup while the prothe ones have an enclosed valve cup

The pistons in question appear to be the Oil Galley Crown style pistons from the European ASV TDI.
They look different from the Nurals I sell in the markings on the crown, they may just be an older version.
The Prothe pistons pictured further down are ALH style, as mentioned they lack any oil ring support which would worry me.
