ANY 020 starter will work in ANY 020 tranny.. it may not have the balls to turn over the engine, but it will fit.. just something to remember..

the 02A/02J trans uses an enclosed nose starter.. the 020 starter is open.

and the mk3 auto tranny starter will bolt up fine and seems to have no trouble turning over a 1.6 diesel.

not sure if it would survive long term, but I used one in a pinch.

mk3 gasser starters are gear reduction, thats why they work and mk2 gasser starters dont.. the mk1/2 units are just to weak.

Bingo..  I'm actually curious what the torque rating is on those..  I really haven't noticed any difference in cranking speed with the thing when hot or cold..  ANd since it was a junkyard find with already about 150K miles on it it's probably already better than half worn out and still working...
