Title: Repacking CV Joints
Post by: Grey_Smoke on January 30, 2011, 04:27:51 pm
The axles are going back in my car, and I am wondering how much grease to pack into the inner CV joints?  I ran a search and couldn't find anything.

Bentley says 45g or 1.5 oz.

and you are supposed to use CV joint grease, not wheel bearing grease..

Yuppers... CV joint grease is specially formulated for the high contact pressures the bearing surfaces endure.

Meh... dunno how much it really matters... "right full" is probably good.

I do know that some vendors sell it in little 45g packages.. that's how I buy it...when the package is empty I'm done.   ;)

I keep a tube of the StaLube CV joint grease around, but most of the CV axles I have bought come with a packet or two of CV joint grease as well:

It's usually a moly/graphite based grease: and it's not just used due to high pressures.

Water will not wash it off, ever. Soap hardly touches it.

Moly-graph, sold in normal grease-gun tubes will work, and is much cheaper.
