Title: best battery for aaz....
Post by: Vohaul on January 13, 2011, 06:24:56 pm
My battery is on the way out ( i helped a little by leaving lights on etc and killing it a few times)

whats the best battery for the diesels...a certain type?

or just the most Cranking amps and cold cranking amps as you can get?

Cheers

Paul

I prefer Interstate.

The one I'm running in my 91 Jetta was put in 7 or 8 years ago, and still cranks it over w/ no block heater at 0F and fires every time.

Interstate is good, but pricey and their warranties are pro-rated. Which means, you only get a portion of the original paid price if it fails, and even then, I think they only give you a discount for a replacement battery (not a cash refund).

I just bought a 94R battery from Walmart for my GFs 2001 Jetta TDI. It comes with an unconditional 3 year warranty and 770 cold cranking amps. The thing tears a$$, and if it fails, I get a brand new battery (not a discount on another high-priced battery).

Before that, I had the Interstate second-tier battery with a 72 month warranty. Well, it crapped out in 2 years. POS. It never cranked really fast, and if it sat for more than a night, it would slowly crank (but always start). It was rated for diesels and had some 600+ CCA. When it died, the death was absolute. I mean NO amps. It reads 12V, but absolutely no Amps.

I prefer the everstart maxx for all my stuff. Cheap, 1000CA and 900CCA, and just as good of a warranty as the next. The only downside is you do have to buy it at the death of america store

good ol walmart im assuming...i was actually just wondering if there were specifics about diesel that warrented a different / stonger battery....

I just got a kirkland battery from costco....100 bucks (cdn)..with 1000 ca and 850 ca for my pickup.....maybe ill just pick up another for the jetta......if theres no specific different requirements.....

I put in an optima redtop, you'll find mixed reviews on them but I like it.

The costco battery with 1000ca and 850cca should be fine. I'm no expert but I think you just want something with a high cca rating. That costco battery has 50% more amps than you need for a 1.9L gasser.

Interstate is a 30 or 32 month no questions asked replacement warranty, after that its prorated.

Four post optima group 34 or odyssey if you can afford it

Iam making a custom horizontail mount ( under the Bed) with two odyssey ER40 batterys
have a 18 x 24 3/16 s/s plate to weld to the bed frames , then attach the dual battery mount
using a BMW remote positive terminal in the engine compartment that has four positive outlets
this will really clean up the engine compartment
the wire from the bed to the remote will be 2/0 cable

To get most power from any battery, do your grounds in 4 guage wire
positive in at least 1/0 2 cable
custombatterycables.com can make what you need

I would sell you my cnc mount and my optima if all parts were done

I just pulled out a 950cca battery from the TDI I just stripped.. Holy could that thing spin that TDI motor! Bro just got a new battery on 36 month return and its a crap tire brand.. Evermax or w.e the hell it is.. And its only rated at 650cca and it spins the 1.6td at -15c with no issues

950cca? I want.

What group is that battery from?

Everstart is probably what you were thinking, the wally world brand.

Interstate told me best they could find for a fit was a 700 CCA for a benz. I want like, 1000CCA, so I might have to strap one of them fire truck batteries to my p/s fender. ;)

i had a short height (fit in my rabbit great) 1000CCA battery from COSTCO.. and it worked awesome until the battery tray wore a hole in one cell...

this 1000CCA battery was pretty long tho. it was about as big as you could safely and comfortably fit in the stock spot..

will have to go out and have a look at it, dont remember many particulars, besides it was a 1000cca..

Yeah my 950cca is a costco Kirkland brand as well.

The crap tire brand is different then everstart.. Its orange labeling.. Meh whatever lol. A big one with a good warranty.. If it fails w.e lol.

I run a 1200CCA Caterpillar BAttery in mine.

If I am ever stuck, she starts her even in -35C

took a tiny mod to fit, but its been great.

The Sterling Acterra fire truck we have at our fire station has a Caterpillar diesel engine that rocks 3 1200CCA batteries. Do you have any pictures of the setup your using or details on the mod you had to do to get it to fit?

A Cat battery seems like it would be a nice addition to the starting system of any diesel vehicle.. However for the price, it might be a bit overkill for me.

wasn't much of a mod, just on my battery tray there was a front lip edge. I cut it out and welded in a longer one.
The battery was the best price.
Free
Warranty on a 950G loader, one battery failed and they sent 2.

On mine I believe I'd have to move the PS tank as the battery would probably hit it. Not sure.

X2 on Optima Red Top.
Got one in my Bus (as it sits for long periods, with a Battery Tender on it)
and one in my Jetta TD.

Only way to fly.
~950 CCA,
and all the benefits of a gell-cell battery.

you can get 2 normal batteries for the price of an optima.

Hmm.. I just can't justify twice the price. When the old fashioned batteries still work..

Now don't get me wrong, if I was rock crawling in a custom rig.. I'd have one pronto.. But with a custom rig, I could probably afford it lol

i can jump start damn near anything with my rabbit.. and its just got a 650cca batt or something like that in it.

but it helps when the rest of your car only takes about 300mA to operate everything..
