Title: Anything work keeping from a '93 passat?
Post by: maxfax on January 08, 2011, 08:34:35 pm
I got a freebie '93 Passat today..  vr6, auto with a rod knocking.. It had a full tank of gas and new battery so I figured it was worth the time to haul it off, scrap is paying decent right now..   Any little goodies that may be worth grabbing off the thing for future MK1/2 endeavors???

Somebody needs the tranny.

Not sure how good the trans is.. The car doesn't look to be too overly pampered..  I was able to drive it here, it knocked between the gears kinda hard I thought.. It has around 130K on the clock, and was supposed to have the trans replaced with a used on a few thousand miles before the rod bearing spun..

I don't really want to go to much trouble tearing the thing apart either...

thats a b3 then is it?

if so, the shocks/struts will swap into a MK2 for a 3-4" lift

if I had a MK2 still, I would ask you to pull them for me...

The struts are garbage, especially the rears..  I guess at least the fronts are still cartridges though...  I was gonna take they leather seats.. They're useable, but not that nice...

IF time permits I may steal the lights and see if they'll fetch a few bucks somewhere.. I get a "fresh outta school" minion come Monday.. Maybe parting out an old VW will be just the proper way to undo whatever Bubba Billy Bob Tech School did to him...

springs are still good for a lift on a MK2, struts are a wear part anyway.

what are the wheels like?(five bolt right, not much good for most of us) could be sold for a few dollars if they are nice

brakes could be a good upgrade for someone.

I was thinking about but have never done any research on swapping the brakes and hubs and such of of a five-lug car; probably only possible, without major fab anyway, for mk2 cars but something to think about. How big are the brakes on a b3 passat?

OOOOH!   I never thought about the brakes...  IF no one chimes in with info I may have to look them over...

If it has a working glass sunroof, those used to sell well for Corrado people.

Weird little things are worth saving:

Light switches fail frequently.
Sun visors crap out too
Grills are popular
Power window regulators
Front 10.1 inch brakes are a nice conversion for MK2 cars.

Does it have the MK3-style battery cables.
Those work great on a Rabbit, with all the extra holes for bolting accesory wires to.

I pull every fuse I can and any relay worth anything. If the fuse pannel works I would pull the entire unit. Vents if they are similar too :D
