Title: siezed my engine last night...
Post by: R.O.R-2.0 on January 05, 2011, 09:19:20 am
so, my engine siezed up on me last night, at about 100 mph.. pushing about 25 psi.. then i started losing power. F###!!!

throw the clutch in, start coasting just before it fully locked up.. got to my buddies house, and to my surprise it started back up..

but now it rattles considerably more (not from the rotating assy) and has a pretty good miss (or 2) at idle..

im aware the engine needs pistons/rings/re-bore.. but is it gonna mess it up much more if i keep driving it? it still runs, doesnt get hot, but it misses like a mofo when its cold or idling.. and now it smokes, like the oil rings are wasted.

apparently you can have dangerous high EGTS, with no smoke at all..

Time for a AAZ install

Good luck...

Sounds almost like the cam gear slipped. Are you sure the timing didn't move?

it siezed up on me. if i would have been slower on the clutch, it would have been skidding the front tires.

took about 2 seconds to go from full power to completely dead. i felt it losing power hard. it wouldnt start up after it siezed. but once i let it sit for a second it ran again. took lots of cranking. but it fired. and this morning when i fired it up, it ran on about 1.5 cylinders..

i know the timing is perfect, and havent even checked it.

i know the compression is dismal, and havent checked that either..

you can tell it has low compression on one or more cylinders..

and about the only way i could afford an AAZ, is if i sold everything i owned. no way on this planet an AAZ is going in there unless i can find one close for a few hundred bucks..

 :o

thank you Gee-Bee! you just reminded me that i know where there is an AAZ, very locally! now to try and get it out of the old german guy who has it.. that could be a chore!

You need to take it apart to see what went wrong.
Continuing to drive it could do lots of damage depending what happened.

well, its already screwed up.. plain and simple.. how could it get much worse? if i lose the bottom end its no big deal. its just a crappy old 11mm CS vanagon engine.. if somethings wrong, it needs pistons/rings/re-bore. i cant afford that right now..

anyway, wish me luck, im going to try and work my magic.. i located an AAZ (i think)

Well if it spun a bearing it could ruin the rods to keep running it. Or it could sieze again and put a rod through the block...

its not the bottom end.. bottom end still sounds great. if anything, it sounds like it has piston slap.

witch would make sense from sticking the pistons in the bores.. ie: getting it way too damn hot.

has loads of blow by also. used to have none. lacks bottom end power like it used to have.

and i found out that a local DOES have an engine laying around. was supposedly the spare for his caddy, and it has an AAZ in it. whatever it is, AAZ or 1.6, it definitely has a turbo on it tho.

im going to find out more about the engine when he gets home, i only talked to his wife about it.. and she said he has one, and is pretty sure he would sell it.

im hoping its an AAZ! it would make a great engine for my Jetta coupled to the ACN trans i have..

Just have a look at it. If the valve cover bolts down around the outside, it's NOT an AAZ...

if it's a AAZ

I will send you a set of engine coolant hoses and engine breather to Brighten up your new year...

How can you tell if it's smoking at 100mph?

well, it would clean up all visible signs of smoke at about 4 psi boost.. after that it just pulled, no smoke. im going from previous experience. only time i saw smoke, was when you would give it alot of throttle with low rpms, and be off boost..

i dunno k3vo lotta If's and Maybe's, but no definitive stuff lol .

it'd be a shame for that VNT to ingest a piece of engine though..

i care about the car considerably less now that this happened..

if i find an engine in good shape, its going in my mk2..

its a 1Y i think. its a 1.9 n/a...

he wants 1100 bucks for it, and it needs a head. he got it hot.

says its got less than 10k miles on it.

but i dont think 1100 bucks is a very good deal for a long block. or am i wrong?

It's amazing how much some people think their trash is worth. I went to look at a non-running, beat down Rabbit that a guy wanted $1500 for. Hatch was rusted through, carpet literally had what looked like algae growing on it. All four tires were flat. Had over 450k km on it. You can keep it.  ::)

if it were an engine that i could drop in, hook up fuel, exhaust, and air, and go to town maybe.

but that engine got hot enough to cook the head, and i think he said he heat siezed it also..

he basically wants brand new price for it, but knocked the price in half because he bought it for 2200 as a complete engine. im going to kindly pass.

any of you canadians want to make some massive points + a little cash? find me an engine.. its road trip time! ;)

good deal, but if im spending over a grand, whatever i just bought better atleast have 4 tires, brakes, a tranny and a fuel tank too.. and be able to drive my happy ass home.. lol.

sorry guys, im just a bit of a cheapskate..

i really wish i had 1200 bucks to just drop on an engine..

but when i drop that much cash, i usually get a new vehicle.

i know its not the best way to do things, but i just kept driving my car after it siezed up that night, and its been running better the more i drive it..

even fires on all 4 right after it starts up cold..

Rings probably got hot and when siezure happend. I have had/seen SBC do this if you really flog one. Usually the fix for them is to put about a 10ft cheater pipe on and break it loose. Usually it runs better than it did before, but has HG issues. I have never heard of a VW doing it until now. Great job.

Whats the rule with these old diesels?

"If it runs don't touch it ;)"

Post by: R.O.R-2.0 on January 09, 2011, 04:04:45 pm
it had barely any low end power for a while after it happened. then it got its low end back, and started firing up better when cold.. im gonna do an oil change, cut the filter open, see what it has to say, and keep driving it.

definitely smokes more when its cold tho. but i think i may have burnt the tips off a couple GPs.. the dome light doesnt dim as much as it used to when i hit the plugs.

still havent checked compression. i really should.

would only have to set aside like a week and a half for the trip.  ;D

god i would love an AAZ in one of my cars tho..  8)

really messy... sucks the big one.

but, i am 100% for positive it has no bottom end problems, or oil pressure problems.

~40 psi @ idle while hot is pretty friggen good if you ask me. bottom end problems would not allow that.

and ive been driving it since it happened, if the rod bearings were going tits up, they would have by now.

and if it grenades, well, ive got some good pics for you guys, and i still have my old 1.5 turbo engine kicking around..

think its possible that it seized from having improper oil in the crank case?

i did have almost a quart of 20w50 in there.. and it wasnt diesel rated 20w50 either..

I dont think the motor oil would have been your problem. If you were running 100mph, at 25 psi, you were revving what... close to 4krpm?
maybe you touched a valve. timing tooth jumped, or timing belt is missing a cog/old/loose.?  or cam slipped. then you shut it down hot, turbo still spinning while no oil goes to it, while everything else cools at different times. maybe the cyl walls cooled before the pistons and rings, which caused them to stick and possibly distort, still giving you some compression but not what you had. then as everytihng was cool, the starter broke free the stuck or burned or distorted rings/pistons. it still goes, but you now have some blow by, as long as the oil is thick, it will boost the compression a bit, enough to keep running,  untill something lets go,  piston, rod, valve, or possability even the turbo.  or the timing belt. ... maybe water in the fuel, or a clogged fuel filter.

the pistons grew too large and stuck to the bores.. thats the only plausible thing to happen. if timing jumped at all, it would have broken stuff. i would have been rebuilding it for sure..

it didnt just lock up.. it slowly lost power. over about 2 seconds, then i threw the clutch in.

it didnt make any noises either..

i was full throttle for atleast a solid minute.. the pistons expanded too much. scuffed a couple on the cylinder walls, and now the rings have been scraping the aluminum off the bores, causing the engine to run better every day..

i know for 100% positive my timing is still dead nuts..

Or the oil broke down too much under the heat and loads and the pistons began to weld fast..  Or a combo of both..

Same but different situation my 2 cycle golf cart was doing the same thing when all this darned ethanol "enriched" gas hit the pumps.. Not to mention I *might* use it a bit harder than it was intended for.. Once warmed up and run hard it would loose power, when shut off it would be locked up..  ABout an hour later it would start and run, just not so well..Specs for piston to bore clearance is rather large so I don't think it was expansion as much as the lack of lube..  Upping the oil in the fuel mix and a cold air intake straightened it out..

If it isn't knocking (in ways other than it should) run it...  Heck I'm still sucking oil out of my overflow tank and yet it keeps going...

made a trip to portland and back last night.. (250 mile round trip + some running around)

and my car never skipped a beat, except when it started leaking on the fuse box and my foot.

no knocks out of the ordinary, didnt get abnormally hot, besides the fact my rad fan switch is dead..
