Title: how do you get the horn to work with a 4 button steering wheel?
Post by: theman53 on December 26, 2010, 06:34:54 am
I installed the said 4 button steering wheel and now have no horn. I read the bentley and it said that the golfs and jettas had a different grounding system for the horn, but not how to fix the issue. This was supposed to be a 4 button off of a jetta anyway so it should work. Could be that the 4 pads themselves are messed up. Either way I need to know what to trouble shoot to get a working horn, please help.

I got it. I did the change last night. Apparently the key has to be on for the horn to work. Started it up this morning and all was fine.
Here's your sign...

Yeah I have no clue. Maybe has something to do with the way it is powered / grounded. I am just glad it works and the fix was as easy as turning the key.

'Murrican manufactured VWs are wired so the horn works with the key off. German manufactured VWs are wired to have the horn work when the key is on. This applies to cars up to '85.

I suspect that the 'Murricans in the Westmoreland plant thought they would implement some of their own 'engineering'. hence the reason why Golf 2s have highly questionable rear bulb mountings and rabbit trucks have grounding issues in the rear taillight harnesses because they used US domestic products. I am NOT a fan of many of the things that happened in Westmoreland. they made the interior on the rabbit akin to a Chrysler K car and screwed up a bunch of things that were really nice on the German made cars.

It shouldn't. Perhaps an American was in there doing some wiring 'repair' at some point and 'fixed' your horn?
