Title: 1984 Mk1 Jetta 4 door 1.6 N/A 5spd in Mississauga, ON - SOLD
Post by: zozie on December 17, 2010, 08:39:30 am
Well the time has come for my love and workhorse to find a new loving master.

Like the title says. It has been in my possession since September 2007. I've put 40K trouble free kilometers on it with many long haul trips. (Like PEI, Quebec city many times ;D)

The bad:
Body's OK with bubbling paint on trunk lid, and cancer on the windshield which was fixed by previous owner. It doesn't leak but it ain't pretty.
Oil light's not working, but I regularly check oil pressure. It's a dash problem according to my vw mechanic. Was going to put it a gauge but never got to it yet.
Driver's door hinge was just changed but the door is not aligned properly (Will prolly do that this weekend)
Slight oil leak at tranny side crank seal (At least that's where I think it's coming from but its not major at all)

The Good:
Awesome compression (See cold start videos), practically no blow-by
January 2008 - 4 wheel bearings, rear springs, complete exhaust from manifold down, drums, pads and rotors, new tiger paw 14" winter tires, T-belt and tensioner
Summer 2008 - New OE waterpump, CV joint boots, one headlight, alignment, Stat.
October 2008 - Pump and injectors rebuilt by Giles due to a leak, new T-belt again with tensioner, valve adjustment, 4 new glow plugs (don't remember the brand but from dealer), clutch cable
crank pulley, V belt, Stat,
Summer 2009 - Fuel tank
Fall 2010 - Fuel filler neck

Minor repairs: light switch, gaskets as required, flasher relay etc.....
Average fuel consumption is always at 5l/100 with 5.5 avg in the winter.
Starts in the coldest of mornings (never used block heater) drives very nice with steering wheel straight, does not pull. Transmission is quiet, could do with shifter link bushings but it's still not bad at all. No noise at all when changing gears.
0-100 is well withing one business day ;D ;D ;D ;D
Solid rockers, solid floor, good doors. Regular fuel filter changes with ATF top up, always use Stanadyne additive, 15-40 oil change ever 4000Kms
Seats and carpets are nice.

I thought all 1.6's had the 5 speed and the 1.5's were 4 speeds.... Been wrong before though. It is long geared for sure. 2 months ago took it to Ottawa from Mississauga doing 100-110 all the way and it drank 4.8L average ;D

All Mk1 Jetta models came with 5 spd. transmissions...unless it was an automatic of course. All manual trans Jetta cars in 84 would have a 7A trans code.

4spd 4A's were a 1.6 '84 Rabbit only trans. 3.94FD and a .70 5th. Huge jumps between gears. OP your engine is most likely mated to the FF/FN transmission, if it is a cruiser and delivers that mileage at that speed. A mere 2450rpm at 100 km/h.

Beauty car, wish I had the space... I'd be there tomorrow

not quite. I have one '84 with the 7A and an identical car with a 4K (amazing amazing transmission for acceleration.)
