Title: Best exhaust line for 1.6TD ?
Post by: Laurentian on December 14, 2010, 06:53:46 pm
Picked un a near mint black '92 MKII Jetta 1.6TD, 375,000 km
rust proofed yearly no rust original paint
needs minor repairs, such as exhaust line and pump seals.
Can get a nice custom line done locally, should I go with 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" ?
Thinking free flowing muffler like a magnaflow ?
What about straight pine, I heard the turbo chops up a lot of the noise ?
Leaning to a mufflered line of course, just thought I'd ask ;D

2,5" straight pipe. If you care about your neighbors and people behind you, put a muffler on it..

Are  you going to upgrade the down pipe at the same time as the rest of the exhaust?

I thought that was a given?

Yes of course on the downpipe, weld up the toilet bowl seat to
the new improved line. Yeah will go with a high flow muffler.
OK then 2.5 it is !
More later after the holidays with pics !

thats not upgrading the downpipe. we are talking about the thing that comes out of the turbo, where the toilet bowl and c clips actually go. that cast iron downpipe is the limiting factor on the exhaust system. you can run 5" exhaust off the toilet bowl, and it will still not flow good like a 2.5" dp/full straight exhaust..

the downpipe is where you get most of your gains..

Hmm, interesting.

I have access to a lathe, mill, grinder etc.
What can be done to enlarge and what kind of clamping method
recommended if I were to do this mod ?
What type steel or just go with cast iron welded in ?
My neighbour is a pro welder, I can machine and prep anything.
What dia. would you recommande after the K24 ?

Thanks, great info !

I went 3" all the way back, 2.5 up to 3" would be good for a DP. This is what mine looks like and if you neighbor is a welder then you are in there like swimwear. Smoking Eddy has a thread on here of angles and stuff he just redid his like last week.

These guys have pre made 2.5 or 3 inch flanges to weld pipe to and summit racing/others have 180 degree mandrel bends in carbon and stainless steel. You would be looking at garrett T-3 stuff :D
