I have a Golf Mk2 GTD 1.6td, I love the car to bits however the noise of the engine is a bit loud.
Im just wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks I can use to help reduce the clattery noise of the engine.
I realise its not possible to turn it into a modern sounding diesel, but just thought someone may have a way of reducing it in some way.
Thanks

1) Retard slightly.
2) Get some nozzles that presquirt.
3) Reduce injector atomisation, by lowering break pressures.
-
1. Increase stereo volume.
As mentioned, the timing affects the sound of the engine so at least make sure the timing is within specs. There are all sorts of products to reduce the amount of ambient noise coming into the passenger compartment, car audio places often have these, they are usually painted on or are adhesive-backed pads.

Hood insulation or new valve's
maybe a louder girlfriend ?

this works for me ;)

good as new lifters properly shimmed :)

I noticed once that my engine was significantly quieter while driving on a very wet road... I think this was largely due to sound not being able to deflect off of the ground as well. Since then I've been thinking about making basically a skid plate to keep engine noise down. Apparently the TDI's have something like that... maybe worth looking into and trying out? I'll probably try it on my car eventually, but it'll be a while. Maybe you could make one and let me know how well it works? :D

Fit a nice quiet petrol engine.
(runs away and hides)

Driving on snow is therapy for the ears. The original sound deadening under the motor is often lost/removed. Try that as a first step. Then Dynamat the whole car ;)

VR6 and ten mufflers

Go look at a mk3/4 tdi & see how much insulation / sound deadening material is both on the hood and under the engine.
Can you run 2 stage aaz injectors in a 1.6? I always thought my aaz was reasonable once warmed up.
-
Yes but they are taller, so you would have to deal with the hardlines somehow. Maybe try AAZ hardlines but I think the pump sticks out further back so they may not line up either.

Yeah, they come with 7-10 things like that.
Burning veg seems to run a tad quieter, and injector nozzle condition is also a factor.

I have a caddy w/ a 1.6TD. Currently is has the OEM hood pad plus I dynamated the hood. I also put a rubber seal all the way around the edge of the hood. Even with 2 muffler in series my caddy is still fairly loud.
I do have one of those TDI sound shield that go under the engine but haven't installed it yet. Perhaps I can get to that this weekend on report back whether it makes a big difference or not.

They sell an OEM MK2 version on german ebay here:

The lower engine bay cover may have also come stock on ECOdiesel Jettas in the US.

I have seen a few belly pans on Canadian mk2 TDs

Park on some grass & get out & listen to the difference. The reflected noise is unreal.

The TDI belly pan is an acoustical thing of beauty... it looks like the wall of a miniature recording studio, with varied sizes and heights of dense acoustic foam cubes. Between that and the top foam-lined engine cover there's a huge attenuation in sound.

Where does it mount to? I wonder how much work it would be to put one on a mk2...
-
The TDI has two splash guards on the sides of the undercarriage as well... contoured to fit against the frame and then flat to provide a surface to mount the belly pan to. Dunno how well they'd fit on a non-MK4 chassis... one might be able to snag a set from a junkyard as an experiment?

I have a newly built 1.6td that broke in and at idle and low criuse it seems loud as you can hear the clatter (especially now a 0°C or lower). Under boost it quiets down nicely and a cruise you can't hear any clatter (about 2900 rpm) with good power. I'm just concerned abit with the sound a low cruise. Is this the way it should be? Just wondering..

Does it sound like its powered by a gang of skeleton flamenco dancers?
"Even in the luxurious S-class, the diesel was slow, smoky, and clattered as if powered by a gang of skeleton flamenco dancers. "

What about mufflers? I've been looking at options to replace my cherry bomb to reduce highway drone, any thoughts? Magna flow has a SS option that'll fit nicely but I don't think they are particurly interested in quiet vs performance & sound.
-
blackdogvan - I have a magnaflow ss muffler I bought from summit that is striaght through ($70). I think it's quiet unless your full on max boost gets a bit louder. I like the fact it's straight through. With 2.5 dia, I'm sure there's not much backpressure at all. (on the 96 golf with 1.6td)
-
I had a Mangaflow on my gasser, absolutely loved the sound. I've got a Grant on this one, also sounds fantastic. I've got a heck of a lot more noise coming from under the hood than I do from the tailpipe either way...

Me too........I've got a thrush muffler.

Smear 'Canesten' on it then; also good for Athelete's Foot :o

I wonder about mufflers with f glass in them over time with soot build up...

This is my GTD. You are witnessing the sound of my attempt to start it after it has stood for at least 8 months totally untouched. Initial sound is me putting my camera onto record, and I later open the door. Below is a pic.

my 35i passat also has the underbody cover.
but its just plastic, can i add something to it than can absorve the sound and still resist the weather and heat?
something cheap,this is a vw ;D
-
Probably some sort of liquid sound deadening like lizard skin. It is ceramic and will take the heat. Maybe truck bedliner, but I don't know how much heat your are talking, undercoat can run close to exhaust with minimal issues.
-
My engine was incredibly loud until i replaced all of the hydraulic lifters. now it's (no exaggeration) half as loud or less...
what i thought was injector noise was lifter clack.
-
if anyone owns a 8v VW with hudro lifters, and the lifters are of unknown mileage, then they probably need replacing..
my last set of hydro lifters made it 40k miles and now i got a ticker again..
anyone know if you can get lifters for VWs with that tiny hole in the face to oil the cam?
-
I think I may need to do this, where do you get decent lifters?
