Title: Signal light relay gone crazy
Post by: catlin_cava on November 05, 2010, 04:58:49 am
I hit the left signal the thing works fine, turn on the right signal light and shut it off and the relay goes crazy and starts clicking rapidly but if i turn the turn back on it goes to normal. and the LIGTHS DON'T blink unless I turn the signals on.

What vehicle is this on?

If it's your MKIV TDI, replace the hazard switch. They're notorious for failure after 60K miles.

If it's a MK1 or MK2, check the grounds. Then check the bulbs, then check the turn signal switch. Finally, look at the hazard switch.

The hazard switches on the early cars rarely went bad. On the newer MKIV cars, the hazard is both a flasher and a relay in one unit. I think more current=early failure.

If it starts to go bonkers again, then you know its the signal stalk.
I've seen this many times. When the turn sig. is used, the hazard relay won't stop clicking.

I've got a new stalk but can't seem to figure out how to take the steering wheel off

What style of wheel do you have? Three or four spoke?
Getting the airbag off is kinda difficult. Theres a square hole on each side in back twards the center. Prying the right way releases the bag. Then there is a tripple square/ 12mm head bolt sized bolt, holding the wheel on and so on.

Do you have the book on this car?
