Hello,
After using the search, i'm still stuck with some questions.
I have a hydrolic 1.6 turbodiesel motor, from a mk1 golf, enginecode CY.
Since i've blown the headgasket due to too much boost, i'm willing to instal a metal hg form a 1.9 AAZ engine and a head from a mk2 engine, code JR or SB.
What are the problems i can expect?
Is the JR or SB head plug & play on the hydrolic CY block? Do i have to modify the 1.9 headgasket?
Is is recommendable to use ARP headstuds? or are the original td ones good enough? can i use the ARP 1.8 gasoline headstuds? since i can't find any specified diesel ones.
My goal is arround 150-160 wHp.
Also, what is recommendable? putting the thickest Hg in the engine, or stick to the original thickness?
a lot of questions, I know :p but I want this done properly :)
Any input is appreciated :)

Are you sure it's a hydraulic head? I thought all MK1 were mech.
If it is really hydro then a metal HG will slap right in, a different head won't help anything.
If you're trying to gett that much power you should go with ARP. Look in the FAQ for the part number of the right ones.
I'd for sure use the correct head gasket, otherwise the quench area won't be like it's supposed to be.

It's a euro engine, and very rare.. pulled it out of a german mk1.
I would like to replace the head with a JR/SB head if possible because a corner of one of the threads used for fitting the exhaust manifold broke off. I could try to alluminium weld it, but i prefer a new head since i've got some spare ones from an JR/SB.
Allright, ARP studs and the correct Hg it is then :)

Hydraulic lifters came in 1985, so never from factory in mk1.

My CY block I'm rebuilding right now is mechanical. I think there is a coolant passage difference between mech/hydro heads. I wouldn't think a single block code would have that kind of variation.... Are you 100% sure the code is CY?

CY is also used in Audi 80 and VW Passat. With hydraulic lifters too.

Yes, 100% sure its a CY.. i pulled it out of a german mk1 golf. It has been a replacement engine in that mk1. So it could also come from a different car, like a passat or so.

most MF blocks ive seen were mech
the CY that came from my 84 rabbit, mech..
The USA didnt get hydro lifters till 86..
And why not use an AAZ head, instead of another 1.6 head? the AAZ head flows way better..

And not all 86 Mk2 ME engines got hydraulic, it was introduced mid-year. I've had one of each, early car with mech lifters and later with hydraulic.

Because i haven't got an AAZ head lying around here, but have several 1.6 heads..and except that.. i would like to have no starting problems.. my girl is going to drive the car sometimes, and she can't even change the wheels ^.-

I've got a 1.9 AAZ head on a 1.6 MF mechanical block, and I have no starting problems with the block heater pluged in ;D.

Hydro head on a mech block? Did you block of the extra oil drain in the head?

Um, you have to ::).
I blocked the drain in the head with an aluminum plug.
I blocked the coolant hole on the block with a chunck of rubber.
I'm pushing 30psi of boost, and it holding just fine.

I've been there as well.
Used a Hydro head on a solid block.
I welded up the coolant passage in the block and welded the hole in the head up.
Drilled the head and block for the extra AAZ coolant holes.

The AAZ head has the smaller steam holes already and its the block that you drill out.
Thats what I did.
