Title: Crank pulley wobble (again).
Post by: Henchman on November 03, 2010, 05:11:20 am: All this talk about crank and timing belt sprocket failure got me nervous (thanks all, just about had that anxiety condition under control! ;D). So had a look at mine, and it wobbles, just a bit, but enough to notice as well as the tensionner bounce around a bit.

I immediatly check the crank bolt to make sure it was still tight. Couldn't get it any tighter if I had Archimedes himself here. I don't recall every pulling the bolt in the first place....

Next I changed the pulley tentionner because I thought it might be a bit weak. Pulled one off a newer engine, same thing....

Then I changed the pulley/ballancer. Old one was rusty (93 w/400k) and changed it with a newer one, no rust, different dampening design, made sure mating surfaces were clean and flat. Same thing!

Where is the wobble (very slight, but there) coming from. Is this just the dampener doing it's job? Will the clutch pulley for the alt make a difference, or just help prevent future issues? (can someone give me a link to the clutch pulley I need? GEEBEE?) When I do my next timing belt, should I remove the crank sprocket and check it, or leave well enough alone?

I will add that both my water pump and PS pump have lateral shaft play, but no leaking, yet, so thos will have to be replaced.....

That's odd ?

All of mine went away after this new damp was installed

Post by: tindias on November 03, 2010, 07:40:30 am: I had a similar issue recently. Wobbling crank pulley, swapped it out for a new one...still wobbled. Turned out to be the crank sprocket for the timing belt. There was minor damage to the keyway, but it was repair able. I was lucky it was caught in time, could have had a major issue if it gave way. I would check your crank sprocket for sure, just better to be safe.

In response to one of your other questions, I recently documented the alternator pulley upgrade. I used the 028 903 119AA on my OEM 93 Jetta alternator.

You'll need a special splined bit set (MN3400 from metalnerd/Roseland).

I forgot Turkey. The tierods on my Caddy are Meyle and made in Turkey. Not bad so far.

I would caution this: Meyle can be hit or miss. On mechanical stuff, they're usually ok. But I have had some really bad experiences with their electrical.

Did the two tools you needed to change the pulley come with the pulley when purchased? or how much did they cost and where did you get them from?

Brian's a great source for parts and tools. With 35 years of owning VW diesels, he knows what you're talking about when you have questions. He won't just supply the parts, he'll supply the RIGHT parts and let you know of all the special bolts and junk that you'll need as well. Stand up guy with great service and prices.
