Title: What rear wheel drive VW's will a AAZ bolt into - transmission wise
Post by: homerj1 on October 31, 2010, 02:20:16 pm
A bit confusing, sorry,

Are there any rear wheel drive VW's transmissions that I can bolt my AAZ to.  Basically 'm thinking of putting my AAZ into another car  ( a Vauxhall) and was wondering if there was a vw rear wheel drive trans -- ie Dasher, Fox  that the AAZ would bolt to.

And then, fitting-wise - I would just to mount the eng trans in the car and play with the drive shaft.

both the dasher and fox were front wheel drive, even though they mount the motor longitudinally.

there are however, plenty of transmissions from other cars(GM, Toyota, etc..) that will bolt up with a little work and an adapter plate/machining of the flywheel.

and the RWD vanagons were rear engined, there were no RWD VW's that were front engined(that I know of)

I think there has never been a front engined, rear drive vw, apart from the crafter (which is based on the merc sprinter anyway) and if you want to get creative, the forthcoming Amarok (which ofcourse will have 4wd).

If you're looking for suitable gearboxes - i would start with the one that came with the car you want to bless with the aaz, or look at some volvo, merc or toyota gearboxes.

take an audi 5000 quattro and simply remove the front axles, then hit the 2 diff locks and go for it..
(wont work without a lockable center diff)

LMFAO..

Dunno if my quattro center lock is worn or something, but it didnīt hold when I tried to run it RWD. It kept kicking it off, did not sound too healthy... Better would be welding center diff solid, seen several times.

924/928/944's can be had pretty cheap around here, especially non-runners. When people find out how much a rebuild costs they frequently sell 'em cheap!

Has no one mentioned the volvo trans in this thread yet? All the 240 diesels were D24's right? I'm pretty sure my friend's AAB (eurovan 2.4) Isuzu trucks volvo 4spd plus OD doesn't use an adapter plate.

4cyl has different bellhousing bolt pattern than 5&6cyl engines.

I looked at one at a dealership in Mexico about a month ago, I took pictures too. Its a neat looking truck and seems comfortable but I'm not convinced VW can build a pickup truck that doesn't fall apart after any abuse. It's expensive too and seems a little underpowered with a VW Golf engine powering such a big vehicle. I have a hard time believing they will sell well anywhere Toyotas are offered, especially where the 4WD diesel ones are available. IDK, I didn't drive one though maybe they are nice, the ones I saw were TDIs with 6 speed manuals.

Anyway, Suzuki Samurai/Sidekick are a fairly popular vehicle for VW diesel conversions and a few companies manufacture kits to adapt the engine to these vehicles and to some Toyota pick up transmissions (intended as an upgrade for the Suzukis). Search for this on google, there is a lot of information available on what it takes to do this conversion.
