Title: info gear shift
Post by: sabatino on October 24, 2010, 07:09:59 am
Hello everyone, I have on my MK1 mounted gear shift of a 75 hp td MK3, but having the 90 hp TDI engine seems to rev too fast, how can I get more 'extension speed' in km \ h and lower the engine revs ? change the gear shift? what kind? change the 5th gear? how?
I accept all your advice and experience.
Can I get a complete list of all gear types shift?

http://www.scirocco.org/gears/

The 5th swap is common. You would probably want the .71 5th for the lowest RPM on the highway. The FN and all the trans codes on that line will have a higher ring and pinion as well as the .71 5th.

Thanks theman53 now lighthouse 'good for the calculations.
You could install a 6-speed transmission of golf4? Would have better results?
Would you be so kind to give me all engine and codes of golf from the 1st until the current series?
Thanks again Sabatino

Sorry if it isn't in that list I don't know. I am only as smart as the links I post  ;D

I am sure someone on the TDI club or maybe here might know, but I just don't know about the 02A and 02J trans.

usually, swapping trannies requires swapping the axles, trans, brackets, shifter and cables, and whatever kinda of setup you need to run your speedo/ecu..

a 6 speed is gonna be FAR from a bolt-in-and-go experience..

it would be much easier to help if i could completely understand you.

are you talking about a gear selector lever, or a whole transmission?

is there any way you can find a translator page that will make it easier to understand what you are trying to say?

I think I know what you mean now.

Since it is MK3 you should be ok to run an 020 out of an mk3 no messy swapping just put it in.

You could run 02J or O2A trans codes with little trouble. These are things I have not done so I am not sure, but I think all you would have to do is mess with the mounts and cables?

The TDI(CTN) trans has the highest ring&pinion ratio(3.15) this will give you overall extension. It is a 02a trans. the 020 trans have lower R&P ration 3.67-3.98. Great for less horsepower but will rev too quick as you said.

If you already have a mk3 trans in your mk1 than you should be ready to go in terms of mounts. I assume you also have a cable shift and hydraulic clutch and 100mm steering knuckles. Just find the code with the gear ratios you want.
