Title: Looking for a pop tester
Post by: Smokey Eddy on October 24, 2010, 03:19:34 am
Anyone near me have an injector pop tester? I'd like to see how mine are spraying.
I checked the tools by location thread (http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=26366.0) only to come up empty handed (almost as if i went full retard - tropic thunder) and i would love to make my own but i do not have a welder!
Fantastic threads:

cheers to Andrew for those!

Much like university i feel i don't have the proper hardware to get the job done so im asking out to you guys!
Vancouver & surrounding area.

Yeah! There's a bunch of people on here in the Vancouver area, so it should get some use!

Do they work with the AAZ or TDI 2 stage injectors though?

BC or WA?

only the second stage of the AAZ injector obviously and not the TDI ones i don't think. The TDI's are multi stage?
Anyways, more than 1 so you would get each pop showing the pop pressure of each springs spring-rate.

a few of us should just build some, then post up on the thread who has them. then everyone can use them..

i know theres a LOAD of people in oregon/washington with VWs that could use a pop tester im sure..

the VW diesel community may be very small, and very hidden, but it is alive and kicking!

I got on craigslist and found 3 injector testers.
One was a bosch,.. the plastic resevoir was missing,.. and I think it had a bad o-ring.
The resevoir on one of these cost $250 new so I found a properly threaded plug at NAPA and drilled it 1.8" NPT so I could put a Rabbit filter with the top cut off as a resevoir.

Last time I used it, I couldn't figure out how to release pressure when done.

A Kent-moore, which is nice compact and easily portable
Nice thing about the kent-moore is the knob that reduces pulses on the gauge.
It comes apart and is real easy to work on,.. replaced an o-ring

the third tester was for gas injectors,.. and had a bad resevoir too.
Got all three for $60,.. and a ride to the cities.

 Here's the one I built:

(http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/4276/injectortester2ly5.jpg) (http://img505.imageshack.us/i/injectortester2ly5.jpg/)

It doesn't have a valve that allows me to lock the pressure and wait for drips, like the other 2.
It is more accurate for setting breaking pressures, but I usually test injectors with the kent-moore.

Any injector tester should have a check valve to hold pressure between strokes. It isn't much good if all it does is make the injectors squirt.

 That's not true.
It works for checking or setting breaking pressure, and with the big gauge it's more accurate at that than the other 2.
,.. or check spray pattern.

Just can't hold it at a steady 1200 to test for dripping

I have the same Bosch and Kent-moore injector testers. They work just fine.
I found a bottle/resivior new for the Bosch unit for around $40.

Anyone else notice that the location section of our little mini profiles beside our posts has vanished?

Yeah I posted about that...I thought I was the least observant person ever, thanks Ed.

If you click on the name I think it still shows it in the profile.

Yeah... Marc's been notified.  I *really* miss that particular feature... you'd think where someone lives wouldn't matter much... but it seems to be an important part of the context of discussions... where to buy parts, weather conditions, easy availability of AAZ engines...     ;D

Under "Forum Profile Information" I put mine under "Personal Text" for now.

<---See!

As a reward, if anyone has a pop tester in the greater Montreal area I would love to check my recently refurbished injectors.

:) Jer
