Title: question about turbos
Post by: ilikevwdiesel on October 20, 2010, 06:10:45 am
maybe this is a dumb question but here goes. I have a 1.9 TD upside down on a stand in my garage with the oil pan off. After sitting overnite there's a small puddle of oil on the floor below the K03 turbo, it leaked out of it thru the fan shaft on the hot side. It makes me think the turbo needs rebuilding as a seal is probably bad. anyone have any helpful comments on this? Apparently it was the oil left in the return line to the block. I would think the way the seals work if there is no place for the oil to drain it will leak. Even with new seals. Overnight would probably be long enough to do it. If you have the chance you could spin the oil pump and see if it flies out.

Could it be that oil got past the piston rings, and went through an open exhoust valve into the turbo ?

If inverted they will leak profusely.  That is normal.
