Title: my 1.9 na intake update
Post by: the caveman on October 14, 2010, 04:05:20 pm
So i finally installed the proper 1Y intake for my 1.9 na instead of the welded/modified CX style 1.7 intake/air filter that i had to use until i found the 1Y [got it from Poland no less!] . Hooked it up to a Donaldson air filter . The whole thing has 2.5 " pipes from the start of the air filter to the intake inlet. I would say i now have another 5-10 % more mid range torque- much easier to keep speed on hills- if any of you have ever driven a stock diesel Vanagon, you know how that is. Next step is to hook up the intake snorkel to the inlet of the air filter. Problem is that there really isn't much room to fit anything now because the air filter fills almost all the space at the bottom of the d pillar. I need to find some very flexible water proof  2.5 " hose- anybody have any ideas? Someone i got in touch has an Audi 80 exhaust manifold and downpipe so i can get the exhaust from the 2" to 2.5".

Sorry to hack, but is that a extra bit of padding/insulation over the engine area? Did you install it yourself? If so, did it make a big difference?

Do you around the engine opening? If so, its part of the aluminum frame/plywood additions that came with the truck . A lot of the ex german army Transporters came like that. In the center section along the floor and l/s wall it had thick aluminum rails in which t bolts where used to brace and mount equipment. I left the ones on the l/s wall to make the body that much stronger and safer for my passengers. On top of the engine compartment were the same rails, but with plywood between them, i guess to level out the surface. It helps alittle with the sound level, but not enough!

I hear you! I just picked up a German imported 88 TD Transporter here on the West Coast. At 100 kmh or anything over it sounds like the motor is about to jump into the back seat!

Do you know which transmission you have? It's possible you have one with  5.5 R&P. Some syncros came with an even shorter one ! I replaced mine with a 4.86, but i'm almost to the point that that i have enough power to use a 4.57, or at least a taller 5th.

They are only temporary until it gets finalised.
