Title: Catalic converter
Post by: arnold on September 29, 2010, 12:33:14 pm
Anyone has a picture that shows whats inside a MK1 or mk2 jetta's soot trap ?
Need to know if it's possible to hollow these out and put a straight pipe in there so it looks original ?

I like your picture ;)

Does the car have to pass emissions still? If not just cut it out, cats on diesels are counter productive.. :P

look on the drivers door jamb. if it says non-catalyst, then hack it off, other wise run a pipe thru it. ive never seen a catalytic converter that could stand up to me with a hammer and chunk of sharpened pipe..

yes it needs yearly emmision tests,WOT to redline and hold it there for 10 seconds,i just back off the feul screw enough.
It needs to be there if it came with a cat,no welding allowed on the cat itself.

R.O.R i like that idea,i can cut it at the piping and attack it with a good sized pipe and hammer.

I'v never seen the inside of these cats,so whats in there is it the same kind of 'stone' like the one in a gasser ? it must been REALLY clogged then by now  ;D

yea, should have the same kind of honey comb internals like a gasser Cat. just take a chunk of pipe, like 3/4 or 1" in diameter, with a big hammer, then just start driving it thru the core. once you get the pipe to go thru the core a few times, it will start falling out the cat. make sure you get the steel wool, scour pad looking things out too. they wrap around the outside of the core, and usually stay put after you knock the core out. ive had that scour pad thing heat up before, fall out of the cat, and clog my exhaust. when your completely done with it, you can even go ahead and weld a pipe into the cat, so the exhaust never even sees the "expansion chamber" you just created.

one thing tho. by hogging out the cat, you will destroy it, and its functionality. plus your car will be louder. it may only be negligible , but it will be louder.

i take no responsibility for you destroying your cat.. cause if you do what i said, it will end its life. lol. but your car will thank you for it.
