"RPM from Sound is accurate to within 1 RPM, and can be used in the cockpit, or from a half-mile away.  It is great for checking your tach or for very precise in-flight performance measurements."

That is cool.
Gonna have to download it next trip to library.

I just got a smartphone, so I will have to try this out.
My car already has a tach so I will see how close the two readings are to each other.

Looks like it will only work on PocketPC and Windows OS, so those of us with Android (Or iPhones...  ::)) are out.

My dumb ol phone is way too old to ever get smart.

It doesn't even have photo ability.
First generation flip-phone from around 02-04.

I kept my old flip (vintage '04) when I went to my Eris, just in case.

I'm sitting in my car with it right now. Unfortunately I don't have a tach yet, so I can't really see how accurate it is. Expecting it in the mail any now :)

I see what it's doing, and in theory it should work. While I have different noises at various RPMs (belt squeals and such) the overall frequency should have a 1-to-1 relationship with engine speed. I think actually driving down the road you would get too much interference from road noise/other cars to be of any use. But it's an interesting idea here in the driveway.
