Title: 1987 jetta diesel 350,000kms
Post by: wesley64 on September 01, 2010, 05:46:43 pm
i have a 1987 jetta diesel with the auto transmission.recently it has started to take a little longer to shift from second into third.it makes the shift at around 80km/hr,whereas before it would shift at around 50km/hr.there is no slipping, just a late shift.the oil is in perfect shape and at the right level.
any help would be appreciated

First I would verify fluid level, and then I would re-adjust the throttle/tranny cables. If you still have a problem I would look at the brake band adjustment. The specs are in the Bentley.

Pull the pan and clean or replace the screen/filter and replace the gasket as well as what Tyler said.
I ran one of these for 435,000 miles by changing the fluid (the pan volume....about 1/2 of capacity) pretty much every 5,000 miles and cleaning the screen and keeping the pan very clean.

At 435K, it was still shifting and running great (except just beginning to need more revs in reverse....barely more revs). The problem was that the engine died and I never re-employed the trans.

Worst comes to worse you can rebuild it yourself for around $300 and a weekend.

i had this problem with my 1.8 carb auto and it was down to some stretching in the cable from the box to the carb..readjusted it and it was much better. not sure on the setup on the diesel though.

on a side note how does the diesel auto drive? is it sluggish? just wondered as i pulled the auto box out of my GL and have since pulled the carb engine out in and put a TD in. ive been asked about diesel auto's and have toyed with the idea (ive still got the auto stuff) but i dont think they did any here in the uk. is it standard on your side of the pond?

The auto diesels in the mk1 and mk2s are pretty rare, probably less then a 1000:1 ratio to manuals. My mom's has a giles pump on it and it's not fast but it doesn't feel to be lacking for normal day to day driving. It's a 1.6NA. If anything ever were to happen to that tranny I would use a 4 speed auto out of a B3/MK3. It's electronically controlled though so I don't really like that idea. My mom refuses to daily a manual car. She knows how to, but doesn't like it.

You need to source out the TJ trans from 85-87 gassers...3.12 final is decent on the highway (3120 @ 100kph). Sure beat the EQ that was in my Quantum - 3.76 final..talk about screaming...

The only issue, finding a auto diesel starter..
