Title: Oil pressure switch on Audi 5000 TD
Post by: colectb on August 27, 2010, 03:19:44 pm
Hi everyone, I have my 5000 TD up and running, but I have a problem: I can only find my low RPM oil pressure sender, and I can't find the one for the 2000+ RPM range. Can anyone give me a hint to where this would be? It is NOT on the oil filter assembly anywhere. This is a dual sender system right? I get a light and a buzz when the engine goes over that, and when the engine was in the old car, i have no problems.

Also related:
I get a VERY FAINT water temp idiot light that flashes at me when the car is at operating temp. What could cause this?

I also have two identical wires for the glow plugs, does it matter where I put them as long as the buss bar touches both?

Thanks, and sorry for my electrical ignorance.

BTW I did search for the questions, and I know the sights where I will get referred to, but they don't really help me except for letting me know that I have two senders.

I will second the "on the back of the cylinder head".  As for the glow plug wires, my car has two red wires going into the buss bar, both identical wires.  I connected them to one glow plug on the bus bar.

Ok, I'll look. Also, I don't understand the movement of the topic to NON VW group diesel.... Last time I checked, this was a VW 1.6 with another cylinder added to it.

well, technically it is an audi.. and audi is very close to vw, but still not vw.

The other sender should be on the oil pump body itself.  The engine you have  has an older pump that had no sender, but there is a plug on the passenger side where one can be installed.  You may have noticed an unused wire in that area when you installed the engine.

  Check the grounding

isnt the oil pump body its self behind the balancer? i thought these things had chain drive oil pumps or some junk? i know they dont have an IM shaft like a 1.6D

The oil pump on a 5 cylinder is drivin by the crankshaft.  Thre are two key like protusions that extend from the front of the crank that isnsert into two slots on the back side of the oil pump.  As the crankshaft turns so does the oil pump.

The end of the crankshaft then goes through the middle of the oil pump on the outside of the engine, that's where the main drive pulley bolts on.

so its just a gear-rotor oil pump like on a 22r toyota 4 cyl?

This is sold as VW industrial motor, and in T4 transporter,05/91-07/94.

what about the ones sold in Audi 5000's and stuff? i believe that would make it also an Audi engine.. i understand that they may be marketed as VW by VW, but the engine in question, is from a Audi. i dont mean to be splitting hairs, but you get the idea..

I've never seen one of those.

Also, in my opinion, Audi is in the VW group, so I would expect this post to be in either the IDI section, or Troubleshooting.

The sender on the passenger side front is for the oil temp gauge on a 5000 TD, not a pressure sender. There are 2 senders on the back of the head on my '82 5000TD. One is a temp sender for the glow plugs, the other is labeled as an "overheat" sensor. Neither has oil pressure on it. The factory manual shows only one oil pressure sender that feeds into the oil pressure module behind the dash. I do not think it really senses oil pressure under 2000 RPM. I believe the tach signal turns off the light when the engine starts and if the switch has not closed by 2000 rpm the module turns the light on. Pretty goofy system.

@Toby.

I don't think that's correct. When I have disconnected the tach signal on a VW, the low pressure part of the warning light still works but the high pressure does not (if it doesn't get a tach signal, it doesn't think the engine is turning over 2000 rpm). This gives you the "normal" type of idiot light that comes on when there is practically no oil pressure at any time. The oil pressure light goes out after 1-3 seconds from startup, when the low pressure switch opens. I could be wrong if the Audis work that much differently from the VWs.

The Audi 5000D/TD system is the one I described. The VW and Audi 4000D/TD is a 2 switch system. I have an Audi factory service booklet that explains the 4 cylinder/5 cylinder oil light differences.

Yuppers.... which is also why this thread ended up in the non-VW section... since the system behaves differently than yer standard VW dynamic oil pressure warning system... the intent of the OP's original question.  ;)

Just for a clarification (sorry for opening up a dead thread) I believe you to be correct. There is only one oil pressure switch for the Audi, and the one Tom described on the oil pump is for oil temp.... lots of troubleshooting to figure all of this out.

I no longer get a low oil pressure light after replacing with a new sender, but now I have just started to get the light and buzzer when idling (goes away when I put any pressure on the gas pedal) so I'm hoping that it's from the sender as well and I don't have bigger problems.
