hey guys my injection pump took a crap, so i put one on that i had tested on the bench and it worked, so i installed it with the govenor mod and started it up and it just takes off to the races looking for every rpm possible (without me hitting the throttle), so i shut it down and pull the throttle linkage off so that i can turn it with vise grips and back off the throttle all the way, it starts really hard and then it takes off to the races again
then i think ok shouldnt have preloaded the one spring, take the preload out on the govenor, and try again, same thing, so i try putting the govenor back to stock and no luck it still does the same thing,
so i think okay smoke screw is in way to far and I back it out all of the way and crank on it until it starts while slowly adjusting the smoke screw in and playing with the throttle, it starts up and i start backing off the fuel but it still just takes off to the races
so here i am with no ideas left and i need this vehicle to run and run right this was supposed to be the pump that goes on the turbo engine and i am glad to diagnose the problems before the turbo engine would have taken off but common what can it be???
thanks in advance

I still think the throttle shaft is off. Back it down one notch and try again. The smoke screw would have nothing to do with this problem. All the LDA does really is limit fuel until boost comes in. You could also try to back off the residual fuel quantity and see if that gets you anything.
-
I pulled the throttle assembly completely off (nothing but the shaft sticking out)
right now the pump does not have an LDA
and how do i back of the residual fuel quantity?
-
Basically there is a minimum and a maximum screw for the throttle linkage. Try and reduce the minimum screw so that the linkage can move back further toward the minimum.
So, the linkage is off completely and you rotated the linkage clockwise so that there is no tension on the linkage? And it's still running away? That'd be rather strange. Yeah, you could try backing out the fuel screw on the drivers side of the pump and see if it gets you anywhere. If not then there must be another problem with the control collar or something.
-
well the run away problem was due to the pushrod that the govenor flyweights push on not having the tip installed (my mistake upon re-assembly of the pump)
well now I cannot get it to idle down past what sounds like 1200 rpm, when i am adjusting it down it all of a sudden stumbles and dies even if i quick hit the throttle a little or a lot, and it starts real hard even when the engine is warmed up in a warm garage and a battery charger on start mode to boost the cranking speed
the timing is set to .086mm dead on where i always set timing to and it doesnt help if i pull the cold start out to advance the timing during start up
please help

Have you turned the fuel screw back up?
-
I am going to try that after work today and see if it works, do you think that that might be the problem, even though the engine practically shuts right off?
-
It's possible. Typically you can make the car idle one of two ways. One is with a lot of advance and no fuel or with fuel and less advance. It runs like crap if you don't have enough fuel at idle and it's quite possible that the injection quantity is just too low at that rpm. It's worth a shot anyways.
-
the answer was way to much fuel I pulled the max fuel out considerably once i got it running and tuned it like that, its way down on power (horrible compression, i think the no control on start up and having it run through the rpms when cold didnt help at all and timing is retarded to help starting)
I had to remove the air filter since it was restricting it to much from starting, and the blowby is absolutely horible
well just need to get this thing home 2 hours today after work and hopefully i will be there there is waiting a brand new turbo 1.6, that should help matters considerably

wow, it sounds like those adjustments were way out. Well it's good to hear you got it running about as well as possible. Good luck with the swap.[/code]

yeah guess i learned something out of this, always measure the distances and clearances when taking something apart so that when you put it back together it will work properly, I will look up the stock specs for NA and Turbo pumps on where the smoke screw should be set tomorrow, the place that I got the injection pump rebuilt was great, they rebuilt the entire pump for me in one day it looks brand new, I dont have an LDA for it yet but the have everything at turbo specs besides the LDA it was
Northern Diesel in Sterling heights michigan, great group of guys over there. not sure what actual cost was I traded them test injectors that work didnt use anymore
Thanks for the help, i think that i am going to put everything back to stock and see if it starts and runs better
