Post by: dieselherb1 on August 05, 2010, 06:22:22 pm
I'm listing this problem everywhere. 98 Jetta TDI running one day, turned off 3pm next day 6:30 am Click! Maybe battery dead, replace bat. nope. Rock the car in gear, nope. Try with a braker bar, nota. Took serp.TB loose, lifted cam up,no move! No lights or buzzers before shutdown. Pulled pan everthing looks cool. Going to seperate trans from eng. AM. Your thoughts.

Did you check the starter before you started ripping things apart?
I've had multiple starters that had the woven copper cable between the solenoid and starter housing corrode through, Soldering in a new heavy duty cable solved the issue.

Hopefully your able to figure out what is going on with it without tearing things apart further.

Yes, starter was first thing checked. This engine can not be turned with a 4 ft breaker bar. Next step remove main bearing caps. Every step costs money!

Did you try pulling the glow plugs? Mabey one of the injectors stuck open
and hydro locked the motor.

I pulled the engine. Pulled the head there was some water in each cylinder. Even with head off can only turn the crank 3/4 turn. I will eventually find out why but for now I installed another engine.
