Title: 1984 Rabbit IDI Swap
Post by: jaysen71581 on August 05, 2010, 12:57:09 pm
Hey guys, ive been reading quite a few posts today and had a few questions, i have an '84 Rabbit that had a gas motor in it, well i took all the gas harness out and have a full diesel harness out of an '84 donor diesel rabbit, instead of putting in the 1.6 na diesel motor i have a 1.6 turbo diesel motor, other than getting rid of the gas fuel pumps, since i have an complete uncut harness am i going to have to do anything special or should this just be plug and play?

your fuel filler neck will be different
the diesel filler is a slightly larger diameter

there may be other things, but i don't think so
i've never done a gas to diesel swap

You will have to swap your relays or the whole fuse box what ever is easiest.  so glow plugs work.  Remove "gas only" tag at filler neck you can change the filler or gut it.  The fuel tanks are different but a pain to change, I would take the high pressure pump out of the system and leave the in tank pump to feed the IP.  When I think of more i'll post.  Getting to do a MK3 swap in the next couple days.

My '83 GTI had a single pump before the td swap. As far as I know they only had one pump on mk1s factory anyway.

Btw if you decide not to use the cis pump I would like to have another as long as it works.

i like anything but 84s. they are like a mk1.5 some mk1 traits, lots of mk2 traits.. my 84 rabbit is the weirdest one ive laid hands on..

and yea, all gas rabbits ive worked on, one fuel pump, outside the tank.. down where the pump and filter are on an mk2..

Well im going to have spare parts left after this, right now i have a diesel NA pump, alternator bracket, waterpump housing, tranny from the 85 jetta td that went with the moter, 2 1.6 blocks and a completely redone head that was professionally rebuilt and milled...

I found what looks like a pump on the passenger side of the car infront of the rear tire, im cleaning pieces of the cars motor as i go so its taking me a longer time to put it back together.
