Title: shell swapping
Post by: ejg3855 on August 03, 2010, 07:27:21 am
I have a 89 Jetta 1.6L and the shell is tired but the engine and trans run great.

I found a 90 Jetta 1.8L that has a blown motor but the shell is in really good shape.

I was wondering if there are any nuiances that I should be aware of before trying to put my motor in that shell.

Thanks Guys!!

Save most of the beers for when you're finished, otherwise it's a go!

make sure the shell was not hecho en mexico, because these tend to rust in strange places. Dont ask how I know.

Check the tranny codes on both vehicles first.
Your 89 "should" be an AOP code - which is a great tranny.
But that was a transition year - and you might have the later one, or a swapped unit.

The gasser may have undesirable gearing - and it may have very desirable gearing. Thats why i'd check what has what.

You can compare codes-ring&pinion-5th ratio's on this site :

www.a2resource.com (http://www.a2resource.com)

Both cars will have CE2 wiring, so you're good on that.
You can put your DIESEL cluster in the dash - if wanted.

I would first verify that both cars are CE2. 89 was a change-over year IIRC

i was thinking 88 was switch on wiring.

yeh - check it anyway

CE2 doesn't have an upshift indicator, and some other diffys.

mid 87 iirc.. i think they went CE2 when they went digifart.. and CE1 was for cis-e mostly..
