Title: engine room thread
Post by: blackdogvan on July 25, 2010, 02:11:49 am
I've been meaning to start this thread for a while, my work has me on all sorts ships & I always like to try & get a few pics of the big iron. In one port I talked my way into the engine room on a 800ft coal bulker, its one thing to see pics of that kind of machinery, another to stand on top of a 60' tall 6 cylinder engine with injectors as tall as I am!!  Lots of medium speed 900rpm european power plants. The ratings are only as good as my memory... I'll post more as I collect, anyone else have some to share?!

8 cylinder Wartsila. You can just make out the funniest Russian chief I've ever met.

2x 9 cylinder Deutz 1800kw to a single shaft, only 1 running in this shot.

This guy has the 18 cyl version, something around 8000hp total.

4X 16cyl 2000KW Alco propulsion generators in a 60's vintage ice breaking research ship. average hr's around 100,000 on each!! (inframe rebuild every 10,000hrs)

That's so cool!!!! I've tried quite a bit to find pics of these things but never could. Those have LOTS of power!!!

On that steam engine is that the kind that get's oiled manually as it runs? Or was that just a long time ago when they needed oilers.

Looks like it. Those little brass cups on the valve actuating rods appear to be oil cups.

There were crewmen walking through it an oiling specific spots as it was running. They only had it going 16rpm during the D-Day memorial.
