Title: Qunatum turbo in an 82 diesel pickup?

Will this bolt into an 82 VW Diesel pickup? Or is it from the VW model that has the engine inline with the body?
As I posted earlier, am looking to put another engine in my 82 diesel pickup. Have narrowed it to a 1.6 turbo as this has been said to involve the fewest changes. Pretty much just drop it in and bolt things up from what I have been told.

A number of 1.6 turbos for Vanagon use are on ebay but I am told they will present problems.

If this one won't work, what am I looking for?

It'll work, but there are a few things you'll need to change.  The primary differences between the inline and transversely mounted engines are the exhaust manifold, intake manifold (can be modified to work though), oil pan, and turbo oil lines.  Obviously, in this case, the belt system will also need to be revamped.

you need to change both manifolds, the oil pan, the oil filter flange, the turbo feed and return lines, all the belts and brackets.

the intake mani will work as stated above, if you have the right pieces to make it work.

if you are lookin for a direct bolt in, get one out of a FWD car, like a rabbit, jetta or golf..

this engine is DEFINITELY NOT a DIRECT bolt in..

The quantum IS a FWD car.

I thought every Quantum I have ever seen was RWD...learn something new everyday.

Only Quantums that were RWD were the "Syncro" models, and they were AWD (Audi quattro system, basically). Of course, someone could have modified a Quantum to RWD; bought my '79 Dasher from a tech who was planning on bolting in a Ford 351W engine. He'd already measured... it fits!)

but its not a rabbit, jetta, or golf is it? its engine is n-s orientation, not e-w like the R/J/G..

Same engine, same parts. Might need to swap the engine mount arms at worst.

the exhaust manifold puts the turbo too far back. the downpipe will hit the linkages and stuff. if they were the same engine, why was so much external stuff different?

You've done this swap before?

You clearly lack understanding of the discussion.

I HAVE done this swap before.  Change the things I mentioned in the 2nd post.  I don't recall the oil filter housing being an issue, but you may need to take R-O-R's advice, and change it too.  Let's not allow this thread to get ugly with a bunch of bickering.

I have one in a 81 pickup,Now! I welded a nut(drilled a hole) to the inside of the oil pan. Used low pressure(400psi) braided return hose. Intake can be used(moved flange to top from side) exhaust from a Jetta,Rabbit TD engine. Alt n brackets from rabbit-jetta diesel. Engine mounts from rabbit diesel.

thermostat housing is also wrong.

I too have a Quantum in an '81 Caddy. I had a pile of Jetta, Rabbit, and Caddy parts around at the time I was swapping so it's a bit tough to recall exactly which parts worked. I just kept picking through until I got the right combo. I do recall for sure that the Quantum exhaust manifold was useless as it jammed the turbo downpipe right into the shift linkage. Even though I was making my own downpipe it wasjust too tight to work around. IIRC the Quantum oil filter adapter pointed the oil filter right into the mount on the radiator support and had to be swapped too.
IMHO, you really need the manifolds off a turbo Jetta. Most of the rest you can work around. I kept the Quantum oil pan, didn't see a reason to change it even though others said I had to.

FYI - this engine has been up for sale for a long time, in multiple listings
i'm not sure what that means, if anything, just a little heads up
