Title: Who else has hands that look like this ALL the time?! =D
Post by: Smokey Eddy on July 20, 2010, 03:22:42 am
My hands cracked and bled after washing them with solvent for like a week straight so this is after 2 tough scrubs with "fast orange" hand cleaner.

I'm 20 and i look like i have old man hands...

my hair isn't much better either.
Anyone else have some good grease monkey pics? I know truckinwagen does ;)

YEP. Seems like every night I go to the farm I put on gloves. Then I need to do something that I need them off and get crap on my hands. Then I don't want to put them back into the gloves. So my hands usually don't come clean unless brake clean is used. Even then that RUST BULLET crap doesn't really come off it more wears off.

welcome to the wonderful world of Diesels!
and with diesels, comes there wonderful, black as night, grease..
my hands are not too bad RIGHT NOW. but when i was done installing the VNT on the 84, i was black clear up to my elbows, hair was a ball of grease from laying on my back under the car. face was all greasy from rubbing stuff off without thinking that my hands were dirtier than the actual spec i was wiping off my face. so in the end, i looked like a football player, had grease streaks under each eye..

is what really sucks is when you go on a good mechanic bender and your cuticles and that sort of thing get so dry that they break open and bleed..

yes I do... ;D

one of the best ways to clean your hands, without using something that will hurt(like brakekleen) is to spray your hands with WD40, it cuts the grease really well, and wont burn on every little scratch.

and for hair, I have found that pre-washing it with Lava hand soap will keep stains off pillowcases(and thus, wives off your back)

and during the winter(when I am around my VW) my hands are rarely not stained and scarred from working on them.

it lets you know that you are doing something right in life.

I've been using a dishwashing liquid that has been working unexpectedly well. Kinda just happened out of necessity one day.

Its orange colored, and smells orange - AJAX citrus dishwashing liquid.
Been using it for over a year now.
My hands come clean everyday.
And they don't dry out. (B T D T - thinner, solvent, gojo)

I used to use blue DAWN dish liquid, it did dry them out some. This Orange Ajax is great and seems like it cleans better than Dawn.

I also use lotion on my hands and arms most every night for prevention. But i have no competition for Vincent's lovely hands.

Tyler, i think your hair musta stayed in that toque.
I don't see very much hair in that picture compared to your promo pic for Dr Dzl's Inj Pump.  :D

I use dish soap, and about 100 gloves a week.
My hands are crack free, and will come pretty clean if I work at it.

Like I said it always goes that way. I use the parts washer as well to break stuff loose. It has keroscene in it now. Gojo I have too works without too much drying of skin.

I use magic soap. doctor bronner's magic hemp oil soap  (http://www.drbronner.com/) to be specific. I prefer peppermint, it does dry the hands out a lil, but it works pretty key.

toque? freakin canadians and your weird names for hats...  ::)

LMAO STARNGE BREW  :) that movie is awesome lol, i agree toque on the head to keep the grease/ rust/ gravel out lol, and the benefit of wearing gloves, (I think us canadians will agree) is that you dont get the beer fridge door handle greasy when you go to open it  ;)

I've got a jar of diesel and grease on my kitchen counter for when I've got soap on my hands. Does the trick quite nicely.

Bahahahaha!!! That's about how I feel with clean hands.

Those thin gloves are nice but only after you get used to them, before that they're a pain.

A few years ago I managed to splash (black oil) and then spill (clean oil) oil all over my head on one oil change!!!!!
About 5 washes with head and shoulders didn't get nearly all of it out so I tried rubbing alcohol and it worked pretty good.

I'm a big fan of the blue gloves... except when it's hot out. You reach up for something and a gallon of hot sweat rolls down your arms. But being in aviation, I've seen a LOT of the old techs developing cancer from playing in cleaners & degreasers unprotected for years. MEK & trichlorethelene was splashed around like water back in the day. I try not to handle any substances in the garage without wearing my rubbers. :-*

I'm with the guys who don't like wearing gloves because of feel issues.  I know it's better and safer, but...
I use Motomaster heavy duty hand cleaner with pumice (citrus).

For the issue with hands cracking, I use Deb SBS 40 hand cream (http://www.seton.ca/setonca/category/First-Aid/Hand-Cleansers/0/5/100031.200296.407000.html (http://www.seton.ca/setonca/category/First-Aid/Hand-Cleansers/0/5/100031.200296.407000.html)) on a regular basis.   I have issues with the skin on my hands cracking open to the point where they bleed, and this is the only product I have found that works for me.

Also, in the summer, welding caps (not sure of the proper name) are cooler than toques.

Barrier creams work pretty well. Apply to your hands before starting work, it blocks any chemical contact with your skin, and allows you full tactile sensation, unlike gloves.

I use the nitrile gloves as well stops the worst of the grease on my hands but eventually they tear and theres one fingernail left as black as night!

I used to hold my semi-permanently dirty hands as a source of pride until one day i got sick after a full day of bleeding brakes on a problematic rabbit. All that brake fluid was absorbed through my skin.  A few years later the DAY i decided to try to start using them, i was repacking a CV joint and noticed a new warning on the tube of moly grease "DO NOT TOUCH WITH BARE SKIN. USE WITH GLOVES ONLY" . This was ,of course, after years of ramming the grease in with my bare hands into cv joints etc. PLUS it's really really bad for your girlfriends health[think about it]. I personally never work without them or at least use barrier cream- Snap-on and Wurth sell it.

The molybdenum is also real bad, as any heavy metal.

I also use the nitrile gloves, though as pointed out, they don't work well in the summer when it's really hot.  The tactile issue isnt a concern for me usually.  But there are some tasks that require taking them off, and I almost always get a lot of grease and crap on my arms too.

Usually I keep the Gojo soap in the shower so I can go straight from garage to shower without leaving greasy tracks everywhere, but one time I forgot that I took it out... since I was already in there, I used the liquid soap we had, which was Dr. Woods Black Soap.  Man, that stuff works better than any hand cleaner I've ever used before, and it leaves your skin nice and soft afterwards.  http://www.drwoodsproducts.com/ (http://www.drwoodsproducts.com/)

My mother-in-law gave us a couple bottles of it so we had it laying around, and now we use it for everything.  Works great as a daily body-wash and face cleanser too.  You can even use it as shampoo.  (which is good if you have a bunch of grease in your hair!)  It's something like $9.00 for a big-ass bottle of it which is pretty good since it replaces heavy-duty hand cleaner, facial cleanser, and body wash all in one.

What I like the most, is that you don't have to endure the pumice or grit of a heavy-duty cleaner on your freshly sunburned arms anymore.  :)

Best Hand Degreaser? This sounds daft, I was sceptical, BUT IT WORKS!

Washing up liquid and sugar. Try It! ;D

I have always bought the crap they sell at the local kragen, the orange stuff.  Doesn't work great IMO, even with a scrub brush I find myself going crazy before I jump into the shower and I always have a haze.

A friend recently had me try dr. bronners peppermint liquid soap at the website below.   I have been amazed that I can get in the shower and get wet and use this stuff with a scrub brush and get my hands clean in one sitting?  I always have trouble with my damn fingernails though, but that is more of a tool issue and my stuff fingers.

Dish soap or gojo with the pumice has always worked swell for me..   AS far as the gloves go, I'll pass..  I find them to be a hinderance.. Not to mention the thrill of melting them to you hand when working on a hot engine..  >:(

I use gloves about 50% of time when mechanic-ing if i'm in the nasty parts - or dealing with someone elses nasty car.

About 95% of time when painting.

That's biggest reason my hands come clean everyday.

I like the clear vinyl ones better than the blue nitrile ones.
I can get them off and back on easier - without grabbing new ones everytime.

Washing up liquid and sugar. Try It! Grin

Do yourselves a favour and try it. Detergent cuts into the grease, glycerine helps keeps your hands soft, sugar granules grind the dirt off your skin, sugar is a good antiseptic, then the whole mess dissolves in water, no gritty bits or grease.

It does sound daft though. ;D
