Title: Timing AAZ with adjustable IP sprocket out of car---no flywheel
Post by: wpinnix on July 07, 2010, 01:07:08 am
I've got a 1997 AAZ with the adjustable Injection Pump sprocket. I'm replacing timing belt, water pump, tensioners, etc. I have 2 issues at the moment.

1) I have no flywheel on the engine at the moment (I purchased it without); AND since no transmission is attached....How do I find TDC for the crank?

2) when the engine is at TDC (judging by cam timing and cam lobes for #1 pointing up) the timing hole for the Injection Pump is off by about 1/4". Do I simply loosen the sprocket and turn the 19mm IP nut until the holes line up?

Thanks,
Bill

You require a flywheel to time this engine with or without the transmission.  The cheapest is use the transmission, no special tools required.

The flywheel and transmission are in the car with another engine attached. The engine I need to time is on the engine stand. I need to remove the rear timing belt cover to cut out a notch for my engine mount......thus necessitating the removal of the timing belt and IP sprocket cam sprocket and intermediate shaft pulley.

there has got to be a way of knowing that the crank is at TDC without having it mated to a transmission.....just need some input on how to do it.

Vw makes a specific tool to find TDC with no tranny but it is rare and spendy... Otherwise you can jury-rig a dial indicator down injector 1 or 4.

Or post a WTB for the top chunk of a transmission with the timing hole. That's what I did to my old blown up 5 speed.
