Title: my motor's finally done!
Post by: arsenicpants on July 03, 2010, 08:43:35 pm
BAHAHA!
I finally finished my beefy 1.6!
my car has been off the road for the last 4 months (started engine swap after head cracked)

Here's a little info
1.6 TD
rebuilt 30k ago
fresh K14 turbo professionally rebuilt running 18 lbs of boost
AAZ metal head gasket
ABA windage tray
G60 valve cover stud and gasket conversion
tweaked pump
210mm GTI clutch
90 amp alternator
2.25" open TT down pipe
2.5" intercooler piping
28" x 6" x 2.5" front mount intercooler
7N transmission

:D :D :D :D :D

I'm waiting on a short shifter for the TT downpipe (second hand pipe didn't come with one), but it's pretty good to go otherwise :)

pics from last summer of the car itself (has rear spacers and front spoiler now)

Sorry to be a pest ;p but euro bumpers are a different metal bumper entirely aren't they? smaller and thinner then the stock Jetta bumpers offered in North America correct?

How noisy is it with the air filter up there?

Great looking car :)

Groovy Jetta.
Lotta icing on the cake under the hood too.

I know they aren't - but the wheels look a lot like 1980-81 Turbo Trans Am wheels.

If it ever has cooling issues, you got a lot of room for more radiator. My A/C radiator goes from driver headlite to the alternator.

Was it originally a gasser car ? Or did you rob a washer reservoir from a gasser.

...suspension tie bar is on backwards!

...suspension tie bar is on backwards!

Does it really matter if it fits both ways? I guess it could as now the front of the susp is being tightened... I dunno what im talking about. I am going to make one of these and a brace for the underside too, they are stellar.

That looks awesome, are you going to have it at the GCVW show? I'd love to check it out!

thanks guys

the intercooler is just barely squeezed into behind my rad, the rad is actually shifted over slightly to make room for the curved piping underneath the battery
the rad actually has zero room to move if i want to go bigger; it's right up against the driver side frame rail, and about an inch away from the alternator
the piping has to go underneath the battery tray for now, i'd have to delete the tray and get creative going around the headlight buckets and wiring if i wanted it any different
a mk2 would have more room for the intercooler though

the wheels are Ronal Turbo phase 2's - I like them a lot, they definitely make the car :)

the car's always been a diesel as far as I know, but this is it's third motor, i'm the second owner

the upper tie bar isn't on backwards  ???
it doesn't even fit the other way, i think you must be confused with the mk2 16v tie bar

I'll definitely be out at GCVW this year  ;D
I had to miss last year due to a sudden trip to VI, but I'll be around this year

Moses ( Moise I think ) from France has a good post on a
MKII intercooler install here in the french section.
Uses a Renaud core, mighty fine !
I'll try and post it up later.

How noisy is it with the air filter up there?

Great looking car :)

X2 on both!
That seems like a nice place for an airfilter, on non ac mk1s atleast I don't even use the blower fan most of the time because the pressure in the cowl area pushes air through the vents. I really would like to know how bad the intake noise is though.
