Title: well, i sealed the pump; but I put it together wrong and blew the head....whoops
Post by: lovinthedeez on June 25, 2010, 05:39:01 pm
So I resealed the cold start lever and rear housing leaks doing the reseal.  whilst doing the cold start lever seal, I pulled it back apart for a second and got the position wrong when i put the lever back on.  all the timing is dead on and it seems to run fine for all of four minutes.  overheats way fast.  Head was cracked pretty good in the combustion chambers themselves.  still overheats way fast.  so then I

1.  Pull the head....everything fingertight(thanks po)
2.  got a hydraulic head on a solid block
3.  new headgasket...pump is proven resealed..gets to start and run just the same
4.  same damn problem......wondering if the bottom end is shot?  keeping the body regardless, but what motor now????

its officially off the road.  Need to do a compression test.

Thermostat, or you water pump isn't pumping.

Well...that sucks.

Justin at Greaseworks in Corvallis had a mostly complete 1.9 IDI TD and a low mileage 1.9 IDI TD longblock a couple of months back.

Justin is a good guy.

That is a great car, quite close to one we had back in the late 80's that was terminally wrecked.
It is for some reason more difficult to find early Jetta's it seems, at least out here.

water was getting sent back to the reservoir fine.  I have a new one, without the right pulley, but that still wouldn't explain the blue smoke at idle and gutless performance.   both radiator hoses are the same temp, and are frikkin HOT.  it's so weird because the motor ran just fine before I pulled the pump to reseal it.  never any running/heat problems period.  I pulled it because it leaked so badly.   :-[ :P  Gives me time to put the new suspension in and fine tune that.   ;D  I'll pull the head and show the cracks.  I bet thats it.  a compression test might give a clue about that and the bottom end.

well, I got a motor finally for my car while the site was down, and was able to get it in and running nice.  got the motor from the friend I gave my rabbit shell to.  ended up coming back to me with a motor in it.  jetta runs like a top right now.  just installed my stereo stuff, and my drop springs should be here tomorrow or monday.  new bilsteins are installed in fresh housings just a waiting...
took it out for a little drive the other day....

northernmost, just south of crescent city.  Typical weather there.  Going back home, it slowly soared into the eighties again thankfully.

anyone know how much giles gets for n/a injector rebuilds?  I think I'm gonna send my other good set out to him.  I'm getting a slight burp, it feels like sometimes at low rpms when I throttle it.  already did the filters and that wasn't the issue.
