Title: oil smoke 10000 k after rebuild
Post by: shopdude on June 22, 2010, 09:45:36 pm
hello group, this is my first post,so please bear with me.About a year ago, i rebuilt my 1992 1.6 TD.i replaced all the usual parts during the rebuild process, including 1mm oversize pistons and rings (the parts were from prothe).about a week ago,it started blowing blue smoke when it got to normal operating temp.it seems to be getting worse daily.I suspect it is the oil  rings are wore  out ,or not seated(or low quality parts).any suggestions about other possable reasons this is happening would be considered.   thanks in advance

What do you expect after ten million miles? All kidding aside, have you done a compression test? How much oil is it consuming?

Smokey eddy had that same thing happen to him, prothe rings and he started blowing oil smoke waaaay too soon.

I've only heard good about prothes pistons until now, I always thought it was just the ring sets that were junk.

If the engine is eating it, you won't notice a loss of power.. quite possibly a gain actually, as oil burns with a higher BTU than diesel.

Crappy rings could have just gummed up and stuck.. what was your break in procedure?

no highway speeds,or heavy loading, for first 500 miles.always kept speeds inconsistant.slightly accelerating and then decelorating,to aid seating rings.after 1000 miles, highway speeds, but, kept changing speeds.at 1500 miles normal driving
