Title: 1.6 td engine rebuild hi-po suggestions
Post by: punkvideo81 on June 13, 2010, 04:38:36 pm
I am about to rebuild my 1985 1.6td engine (mechanical head), it is in a 1981 Rabbit pickup. I want to know what performance upgrades I should do to it either during the build or after. Ideally, it will be a great street driver with a mean streak. Not looking to drag or rally it. Here is what I have done so far:
Giles pump
Intercooler
2.5 inch TT exhaust and downpipe

Any suggestions? I was contemplating a passenger performance intake manifold after the build. Thanks!

Turbo is the heart of the engine, so make sure you don't skimp on that. A modern GT-series Garrett, a HW or HY Holset, A Mitsubishi or similar. Or even a VNT. With the right turbo you'll save on the ling run, on engine rebuilds and on other upgrades that you won't need once you have the right turbo.

These engines can be very very nice once you throw away the '70s stock turbo  ;)

gasket match the head at the least, a better turbo and intake manifold for sure.
