well today i pulled off the plastic cover that goes over the rail tray on my MKII jetta (1990) to start the epic job of replacing the heater core lol, and noticed what looked to be the vin stamped in the rain tray, upon further inspection it was similar to my vin but no quite dead on the number is as follows WVWZZZ1GLZW182690, now, my actual vin number printed under the windshield is WVWPH01G9LW182690, is the first number in the rain tray maybe a body number?? just wondering everytime i go somewhere to get parts including the dealership the car was bought from brand new they all tell my my vin is invalid lol

This should be in the FAQ if not already. Good, concise info.
-
I'll retitle and move it once smoken u gives the ok. If I move it people probably won't answer his question.
-
the vin is stamped in the rain tray and on the dash, and from the factory matched.
what probably happened at some point is that the dash was swapped, and the vin tag was not.
or the vin tag on the dash was swapped in order to get a new title(for any number of reasons)

Too coincidental that the last 6 digits match.
That sort of points away from a swapped dashpad.
Or anything besides a factory goof of some sort.
I've seen that happen on a car where the guy wasn't thinking about the VIN plague when he swapped dashes, but the VIN's were miles apart.
The VIN on the body/raintray "should" match the Title.
That is #1 priority.
But like truckinwagen said, the dashpad plague should also match.
However, going by the parameters supplied by Arnold - your car is one of a kind and off the charts.
Maybe it was a factory test mule or something odd like that.
Its definitely weird.
I would contact VW of America.
That deserves an answer.
Which VIN is on the title ?
-
Did you buy this car new? or do you know the previous owners? don't forget you could try a carfax on both VINs and see what comes up before contacting anyone. If you bought the car used from someone the Shell could be of a stolen car with a different title and that could leave you without a car. Just a thought.
-
Maybe it's best to just keep hush hush about the whole thing :-X
-
bought the car as the second owner, with only 12,000 Kms on it, it was owned by an elderly couple who towed it to florida when we bough it it had never been in an accident, and the only claims on it from carfax are from the other 500,000 kms of driving weve put on it (mainly being a tw truck that rearended it, an encounter with a mailbox and a pontiac 6000 that hit the drivers door, thank goodness none of it was too severe lol and it still wears all it orgional body parts :) ) as for th vin on the title of the car it is WVWPH01G9LW182690 same as the one that is on the dash plaque i may just call vw america i really wanna find out what it means lol
-
also forgot to mention when we bought the car origionally it was purchased from the same dealership that it was also purchased from brand new, autohaus barrie, which is also the place I go for alot of my parts, and the same place they tell me my vin does not exsist lol
-
carfaxed both vins all the events for the vin plaque on the dash i know about, and there is no listing for the vin on the raintray, lol so i have no idea, i think monday ill call vw and see if they can tell me anything about it according to arnolds post the vin on the dash plaque is as follows
1 W= german built
2 V= volkwagen
3 W= passenger car
4 P= 4dr sedan base
5 H= no listing but its 1.6 TD
6 0= active, manual restraint
7 1G= 89-92 jetta/golf
8 9= vin check digit
9 L= 1990
10 W= built in wolfsburg
11
12
13 production numbers:182690
14
15
16
Now here is the “strange” vin that I found on the raintray decoded as follows
1 W = Built in Germany
2 V = Volkswagen
3 W= passenger car
4 Z= 3 door camper van
5 Z= no listing
6 Z= no listing
7 1G= 89-92 golf/Jetta
8 L= vin check number
9 Z= no list
10 W= built in wolfsburg
11
12
13 production numbers 182690
14
15

ive seen a few cars like this before. the dash and door jam have the right vin tags, but the body has a universal vin stamp above the intake manifold.. i think my 92 is this way, and the old 2 dr cream colored auto gasser golf were like this.. i know i have personally owned a couple of these cars. the there are a bunch of z's in the vin on the body. but the rest of the numbers and letters should be in the same place, and be the same letters right? anyway, thats my take on it.. maybe they arent universal vins? just my $.02

The dash could have been made somewhere else but intended for that car?
