Whats the best thermostat for winter? I see the highest being a 92c thermo.. that would allow the engine to get nice and hot before it even touches the rad correct? Would I be safe running this all year round if my ambient temps never topped 35c? I just want heat this winter, it will be my first Diesel Winter :)

ooh, also another question.
I have noticed on the last few mornings going to work, it has been between 10-15c.. firing the plugs for 8-10 seconds and starting results in smoke and rough idle.. pulling the CS immediately clears it up however.. could it be ailing plugs? compression? or is my fuel screw too low? (I was messing with it couple weeks ago during stupid hot weather) What was a good idle then may not be a good cold idle :P I will give it a small turn up tomorrow and see how it helps. yes?

I run a 87C t-stat year round, the heater works good and the temps don't get high at all in summer.

In my Jetta TD I ran a 91C year round.
Your cold starting sounds normal.

Good I will be investing in a 91C thermo. on the mk1's it looks as though it is behind where the lower coolant elbow goes in to? Behind that flange?

Yes. Hope you don't have power steering

Did mk1's ever come with this as an option? It was sold to the big tough guys with 16 y.o girl arms right? lol

Yeah MK1s came with PS. Pretty rare though, mostly on 16v sciroccos and cabbys.
