i have a wrecked golf with a good AAZ. I was just wondering what is involved if i were to swap it into a gasoline powered golf? I have found one with a great body and if its not too hard to do it would save me a lot of money.
cheers

Glad you found a good chassis. Should be able to drop it in in a weekend with the right tools. Might take a little longer if you decide to swap the wiring harness too, rather than using the gas harness and addidng a glow plug circuit.

Looking at similar swap... Old 1.6 TD engine in a 92 that I have owned for years into a 99 Jetta GT in good shape. Can you provide any additional info on the Bosch universal glowplug kit? Only other challenge is going to be the tach, I really don't want to get rid of those nice silver backed gauges! Oh, and figuring out if the 2.0L serp setup with A/C will bolt on to the 1.6...

The serp setup will bolt to a 1.6 if you get the deisel serp bracket. without that it hits the injector pump. I have a 96 I've put a 1.6 into and I deleted the AC, but stayed with a serp setup. The only other change is finding a diesel crank pulley or machining a gas one shorter (I had an aluminum one that i machined to fit wider crank sprocket).

Thanks. Great info on the pulley mods! Have to start looking for parts soon... I hate to take out a perfectly good working A/C setup as I don't have a sunroof.

GLOWPLUG KIT, run a wire to your ignition, these will turn off auto or when the engine is warm
Ebay item :360225273411
These are the fast type, you can add a led light if you wish...
I just count to 7 and starts like a top....

I think that's an "add fast glow plugs to a car that already has glow plugs" kit, as opposed to an "add glow plugs to a car that's never had glow plugs before" kit... which I'm wondering is what the OP is actually after?
If it's the latter I don't think I've ever seen a third party relay kit... most people either swap over the diesel harness, fuse block with relay socket etc, or simply add a starter solenoid under the hood and a pushbutton on the dash. Some thoughts on this approach here: http://vincewaldon.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=30&Itemid=28 (http://vincewaldon.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=30&Itemid=28)

I went from a gasser to a 1.9 aaz, so it's what I used

I did the same swap in a weekend, including swaping the harness.
Everything just plugs into the back of the fuse block, the only thing i had to wire was the fuel sender because i swaped tanks.

How different is the gasser trans gearing? I have a strong engine with a worn out trans (almost 700,000kms). If I am using the gas trans, should I drop in a diesel 5th gear?
-
Depends on what trans you have ;) Some of the ratios were the same between the two.
On the highway, was the engine screaming? or was it cruising low down in the rpm?

I'll have to check the trans code... Not sure yet - still in the planning/research (asking questions) stage. Gotta get my wife's old car - 99.5 gas/auto - fixed and sold before I can start another project or I might end up divorced. This will be my first engine swap so I want know have a good idea of what I will be into before I tackle it.

This swap is really easy if both are MK3 bodies. There is minor differences in the wiring harnesses. 93-94 is the same, 95 by itself, 96-98 is the same. I just did it May 24 weekend. 97 Jetta GL donated engine and harness to a 94 Golf CL 2dr. I also swapped fuel tank and lines total project about 15 hours. I had built a transmission during the week before so I did not use the 1.8 gas transmission. Good luck with the swap.
