Title: sb conversion trouble

hi
  ive had an sb engine sitting in my garage for a couple of years, it was a good runner. ive now put the engine in a mk2, and when i fire it up it just revs as though the accelerator is to the floor, ive checked the obvious things including the throttle arm in the the pump and im guessing the revving is an internal problem in the pump. can anyone shed some light on this please? any help appreciated

You have it right. Internal corrosion. Hopefully mild corrosion - doesn't take too much to cause this.

About all you can try - without taking pump apart - is Transmission Fluid.

Disconnect fuel solenoid.
Remove fuel from inj pump.
Fill pump with fresh ATF.
Let it soak - and every few hours or so, crank engine over some (aka rotating pump).
Do that as often as possible for about 2 days (but i wouldn't leave the ATF in there for more than 2 days at a time)

After day #1 - you could try re-connecting fuel solenoid - and run the engine again to see if it has changed any yet. It will run on ATF.

If not cured yet - refill with ATF and proceed onto day #2 and hope for better results.

thnks for the replies guys, ill try atf.what is the best way to fill pump with atf? through the fuel inlet on the pump good enough? would i do the same with neat diesel purge?therefore fill the pump with it?cheers

The best/easiest way to get the fuel out - and the ATF in - would be to use a vacuum type device like a MightyVac or brake bleeder.

You would put your fuel supply hose into the ATF jug.
Then connect the siphon/vacuum pump to the fuel return hose.
Siphon until you start getting pure ATF coming out the fuel return hose.

If you don't have access to such a device - you could disconnect the fuel solenoid and let the inj pump pull the ATF in on its own by cranking the engine over in segments with some cool off time for battery/starter between segments. Put your fuel return hose into a seperate container so you can see when ATF starts to come out of the pump.

Just for myself, i would start with ATF since it is cheaper than Purge products. Then if ATF didn't cure - i'd probably be tempted to try the same routine with a Purge product before giving up.

It is a personal choice you will have to make.

no luck using atf or diesel purge. does anyone know of anyone in the uk that could repair my pump, maybe someone that could do some of the tuning mods to it aswell?

well ive sorted my issues, i decided to strip the pump myself, not as bad of a job as i imagined. it was all gunked up ecspecially what i guess isthe govenor.( centrafugal weighted mechanism) anyway its running nice now, the only trouble is its a little smokey. trouble is top torx screw and max fuel screw but tw have been p****d about with. ive tried adjusting the top torx screw but this makes no difference to anything does anyone know what the settings are?
