Title: Upper/Lower Strut Bar!
Post by: ffgb on May 16, 2010, 07:55:38 pm
I want to buy a upper strut bar for my 1984 rabbit diesel 1.6 N/A.  Who here has the Neuspeed one, Eurosport one, and the ABD racing one?  Do both clear the stock intake manifold?  Also, for the lower tie bar, what is everyone running?  I would like to run the scirocco k-bar but I am having a hard time finding one at a junkyard and finding one elsewhere.  I have seen the Eurosport 2-point and 4-point design.  I am leaning towards the 2-point design because my car is slightly lowered from my coilovers.  It seems that the 4-point doesn't give you as much clearance and the price is almost triple to the 2-point.  Another option would be the ABD racing lower 4-point subframe brace which is a replica of the scirocco k-bar.  Does anyone have this ABD racing one, how is the quality?
Thanks

I have the neuspeed upper strut bar installed, it clears the stock n/a manifold as well as the g60 manifold no problem. I also have the eurosport four point lower bar and I wouldn't really worry about the clearance unless you are really low, the bar isn't much lower than your sumpguard.

My control arms are past horizontal.  My front tires are right about 1/2 inch below the front wheel arches.  I don't know how much drop I have from stock because the stock front springs were worn along with the struts.  I went with coilovers all around.  The front, after settling a bit more should be right at the front wheel arches, meaning no gap, just even.  As of right now, my 15qt plastic oil receiver for oil changes touches the bottom of my oil pan.  I don't know how much clearance from the ground I would have if I bolt the Eurosport 4-point brace on.  I know the scirocco factory 4-point brace offers better ground clearance, but I didn't want to drill in the webbing of the vehicle to attach it, I would much rather just bolt the Eurosport 4-point brace and call it good.  Thanks

If you're control arms are inverted I'd consider that to be pretty low. I'd also consider that you might have suspension geometry problems that my be more pronounced with further stiffening of the chassis.

Are you running a sump guard?

I am not running a sump guard.  I ended up purchasing the 4-point brace from Eurosport.  My front control arms were horizontal, but with the coilover springs settling, they aren't horizontal anymore.  I was going to raise the front a little bit, but with the rear end raised all the way up, I have a level ride right now.  If I were to raise the front end so the front control arms were horizontal, the front would be higher than the rear.

I can take one, it is sitting in my garage with some other parts waiting for time to install. I have the OEM guard but there are probably aftermarket products available as well.

I've run a  few upper strut bars, all have required lowering the fuel filter an inch or so and one required some spacers to clear the coolant bottle.

I run a lower Scirocco bar:
