I have a stock 1983 Jetta Turbo Diesel. I'm not sure if the dipstick is OEM. When I change the oil and filter it requires 6.5 quarts to fill to the top mark. I do know the oil pan is stock.
My question is: What is the length of the metal dipstick from the top rubber stop down to the top mark? Pictures of an OEM dip stick would be great.
Thanks.

If you use the large (NA) oil filter - 5 qts MAX.
4.8 qts is standard issue.
You have way too much oil in there !
I have a similar dilemma with a hybrid NA/TD i just changed the oil in for first time since purchase. 5 quarts puts nothing on the dipstick ! fuggenbich
I have a few other VWD cars with various engines that I'm going to pull dipsticks on and see if any gets a reading in this particular engine. Will measure the various dipsticks, too.
Glad I read your thread - to remind me to do this.
Will report back with findings. Maybe tonight.

I don't know which type your set-up will be.
My 82 NA has a short spout. You have to reach down in there to get to the dipstick. The dipstick has a looped metal pull rod on top.
The actual working length from top rubber stop to bottom is approx 7 and 3/4". I forgot you asked to measure to the top oil fill mark.
85 TD has a long spout. It comes up to about level with the throttle cable. Has an orange funnel cap on top of spout. Dipstick has a red plastic top with ears that snap down onto the orange funnel.
Actual working length is approx 19 and 1/2".
89 NA has long spout. About level with throttle cable. Yellow funnel cap on spout. Dipstick has yellow plastic top - no ears.
Actual working length is approx 20 and 1/4".
The NA/TD Hybrid has the long spout with red funnel cap. Had the red plastic top on dipstick with ears. But getting NO oil reading with 5 qts.
Put a yellow top dipstick from an 89 in there, and got a perfect oil level reading.
So now I know what I need for that one.
Junkyarding on Monday anyway.
Thanks for reminder !

you just need the right length of dip stick for the tube you already have. what year is the engine? try and find another DS out of an engine of that year.

Thanks for the replies.
The engine is a 1983 turbo diesel. In currently has a short DS with the curled metal handle with a red rubber stopper.
I'll take a picture tonight and measure it's length.

Pix below are of the dipstick
It measures 20.25" from the red stopper to the metal tip.
Any help if this is correct for a 1983 Jetta Turbo Diesel?

same dip stick i have in my 84 TD engine. thats gonna be a hard one to find a replacement for. only one ive ever seen, is the one i own, every other one ive seen is different from the kind we have. i made my own dip stick tho, so the one i have is hanging on my wall as a spare.

So the above pictures are the correct dipstick for a 1983, 1984 TD?
What's your oil capacity? With large oil filter I'm 6 quarts to full.
-
never paid attention. in my 1.5TD, it takes right around 6 quarts. i would guess atleast.. i have an 84 oil pan, and dip stick on my 1.5

so what would be the potential problems resulting if too much oil put in?
