Title: aaz IDI into a Mk4?
Post by: homerj1 on April 30, 2010, 06:18:59 pm
Hello everyone,

How doable is putting a 1.9aaz into and mk4 and up? I'm assuming that the Mk4 has very messed up tdi that is not worth rebuilding?

What would you have to change\ alter\modify.

thanks

I doubt a TDI is ever not worth rebuilding... it would have to have eaten steel wool or equivalent.
i would never put an IDI in a car that was already set up electronically for a tdi. its just a waste in my opinion.
I drive an idi and i can honestly say hands down  tdi is superior in every aspect.

I'm guessing he's talking about a car he can get for next to nothing, and an engine he already has. working on a shoestring budget?

Can't answer his question, but I can see why he's asking it!

Exactly what I was trying to say - sorry for the cryptic language - just tired after a busy week in the coal mines  ;)

I saw a 1.6 NA swapped into a mk4 in place of a TDI engine. The guy said it was ok. Obviously low on power but he said he got great mileage still. He was running veg to boot. I think they swapped in the 020 as well but I can't remember for sure. I would definitely swap in a tranny to raise the RPMs since you won't have the torque to pull around a heavy mk4 with an IDI.

Any AAZ swap is fairly easy from a electrical perspective... 1 wire and you're done.  There would be a number of mechanical things to sort out:

- MK4s are drive-by-wire so you'd need to swap in a conventional pedal cluster with a throttle cable
- engine and tranny mounts are very different
- tranny itself... MK4s use a conventional hydraulic clutch, throwout bearing etc...
- exhaust downpipe
- air intake

The tach won't work since there's no ECU and I'm not sure about communication between the ECU and the ABS brakes, the convenience module that controls the windows etc.

No doubt someone on Vortex has dropped something simple like a 16V into an MK4... a bit of searching there might give you some ideas.

Thanks for the insight guys.  I like the reliabilty & simplicity of my aaz and was seeing what else it would fit in VW wise.

I'm actually thinking of a vw wagon with a aaz - and was checking out the pre 1998 golf wagons in the UK.

Howdy! I mostly lurk, hence my low profile. It seems you've got a ton of vw stuff in Bathurst, where here on the Island it is a little bit more scarce and more $$$.

I actually checked into shipping a Golf wagon from the UK and I think the price landed in Halifax (car and shipping) was about $2000 not including taxes and customs and safety check. Just currently don't have the $$$ and the 96 Golf td is running ok
