Title: removing shift knob
Post by: 92EcoDiesel Jetta on April 24, 2010, 07:31:41 am
I haven't posted in a while. Jetta is running well & tach is doing fine.

I need to replace the shifter boot. How do I get the shift knob off? I tried turning it but it didn't give. What's the trick. TIA!

Turn it counter clockwise...maybe a towel and channel locks?

It's screwed on there. If it won't give, wrap a rag around it and grab it some channel locks and turn.

If the towel + channelock pliers combo still slips too much, try just wrapping the jaws of the pliers with electrical tape (use plenty of it, no towel).

make sure its not one of those ones that has set screws holding it on. one of the universal kind you get at wal mart i mean.

Thanks for the replies! I used a strap wrench and it came off after a couple of tries. It was on pretty tight and my (weak) bare hands was not strong enough apparently. Anyway the knob needed no protection from the rubber strap.
