Yeah... well, I do.
However I don't know if I should stick to the 1.6? or jump to the 1.9 IDI? or go TDI right off the bat?
what would you do? If I can find a full donor car, that would be the route i would take. How would you do it...
-
1.6td is plenty for a mk1
IMHO the only way I would do Tdi swap in a mk1, is if I had an absolutely MINT car. I couldnt justify going tdi unless it was going to be my baby/ showcar.
-
What are you replacing? I'd spring for a 1.6 bottom end and AAZ head, I don't like doing things normal. ;D
-
I'd just jump to TDI. Its more involved and more money, but the offshoot is more power. If you don't want as much work, and modding, go with the 1.9 AAZ. Really Jer, its ultimately up to you and your goals, and your budget.

AAZ 1.9 engine on Samba forum
Where here to help when you do...

Jeremy if you want an AAZ I have a lead on one in Barry for 350$ with a transmission.

If he doesnt take it I would , Will they ship it ?

Swap ina 1.6na. Lots of room in the engine bay for the odd time when somethine breaks, everything is either the same price or cheaper then the turbo parts, everyone and their uncle has some na parts, mileage is fantastic. Need I go on? ;D
-
tyler, i think all his cars already have n/a engines. im thinking he wants more power. n/a engines are great because they never die, but its because they do not have enough power to kill themselves. im thinking a built up n/a would be fun tho. tweeked pump, header & pipes, sweet intake manifold, maybe a HUGE blast of LOL.
-
Tyler, just because you hate Turbo's doesn't mean it gives you the right to preach to everyone about N/a's :P
I was considering maybe a VR6? will it shoehorn in there? lol ;) I kid I kid, I joke I joke.. please please forgive me.
Seriously though, the 1.6 so far has been a good engine (even though I've only been driving it a month). The N/a is most certainly satisfactory being it my first Diesel. (which was what I was going for.. simplicity on the first ride.) However now I long for more power, I'm not talking about going all out on the thing.. but I do want a little more then 35whp lol.
If I were to go the route of AAZ what all would I need from the donor car? They are still mechanical pumps yes? So I wouldn't need much more electrical then maybe a few sensors.. eh? The motor mounts will come off the 1.6 block and go right on the 1.9 block? What about transmission.. will the inner CV axle join up to the AAZ trans? Also do those cars have a cable shift? they are on the 02A trans am I correct?
I think AAZ will be best to fit my budget. I will be looking to make this as simple as possible and I feel with the current economy going to TDI right at this moment, wouldn't be a wise step.
please if you don't mind any links you have saved on AAZ swaps in to an mk1, I would appreciate them like you wouldn't believe. I will post over on the Vortex as well probably, as they have a few more visitors.. no offense right guys? lol
-
i know that you have to use a gasser mount on the pump end of the engine. the 1.6 mount wont fit. the block on a 1.9 is too tall.
-
do the pumps mount differently to the 19 engines? interesting. Well it just so happens I may be able to steal a gasser mount off the 84.
-
Can anyone confirm the mounting procedure of the 1.9 to an mk1 frame please :)
-
Since you like cheese, I'll share one of my favorite 1.9 -> MK1 links:

Easy peasy.
-
Vince that is a killer read. HOWEVER. That is an mk2 1.6td in place of a 1.6 n/a.. Nifty read and good pictures. I read the whole thing :P lol
-
1.9 should pretty much be the same... it's the passenger mount that's the biggie.
-
the engine swap itself I am not to worried about. its the getting the 1.9 to fit correctly and have mounts line up i am in turmoil about. ;)
I think i will be using my old trans

Just buy a Prius and be done with it... ;D

Just buy a Prius and be done with it... ;D
I Think Jeremy MIGHT want the ability to stop ;D
-
Some 1.9 pumps mount the exact same as the 1.6 pumps. It's the 2 piece ones that are different. If you get a single piece pulley just use the mk1 motor mounts, swap the mk1 coolant flanges and bolt your tranny up to it and away you go. Exhaust will be different as well.
If you do get the 2 piece pump style then you need to modify the mounting bracket. It's a matter of using a mk1 gasser motor mount and cutting the stock mk1 diesel one.

After really taking a look at most vehicles driving around.. it appears they are all TDI Mk4's...
Should I bite the bullet and start to put together a TDI swap piece by piece?
-
As first swaps go I'd personally not recommend a TDI... it's an orders-of-magnitude increase in complexity due to all the electronics: under the hood (ECU etc), the cluster, the immobilizer ignition system (post 2000), and the mechanical stuff: the speedo, the clutch, shifter, the pedal cluster...etc etc etc.
-
Plus if you get a mk4 TDI you will need custom motor mounts. If you get one from a mk3 then it is bolt in.
